    Ash Wednesday 2001

    Light, light the fires

but do not let the embers

    fade, the ash grow cold

for then the phoenix cannot rise.

    Fan, fan the flames

    our animals deserve to light

the sky from east to west

    to mark their sacrifice.

    Where, where is their inheritance?

Not one lamb or calf or piglet left

nowhere that sheep may safely graze

or munch the grass their parents fed upon.

Blow, blow the ash and keep it

    burning
