About this ebook

Dylan accepts an invitation from his old college roommate, Casey—who Dylan hasn't spoken with in many years. It concerns a revolutionary invention. A body-swapping machine. After Dylan helped Casey survive college, the now-more-successful Casey intends to repay the favor by rewarding Dylan with a sizeable investment in his company.

Dylan can't believe it, but a quick swap into his former college roommate's body changes his mind. Then Casey proposes a more intriguing swap: one that involves his very pregnant wife, Victoria.

The swap works. But Victoria is passed out on the floor.

She's rushed to the hospital, leaving no way for Dylan to get his normal body back. He's now heavily pregnant with a due date fast approaching, suffering the aches and pains of his very bloated body. Victoria's going to be okay, but all he can do is hope she's released soon. Otherwise, it'll be Dylan going into the delivery room!

The address led me to one of those ugly modern houses—the kind an infant would make out of haphazardly stacking blocks together. The lawn was pristine, and the windows were so large that the house appeared to be gaping on every side, allowing anyone, even the neighbors on the next block over, to see the owner’s furniture.

I was almost sure I’d transcribed the information incorrectly. No way Casey lived here. He’d nearly flunked three semesters in a row. Only with my help had he been able to graduate. And now he had himself a pad worth millions?

That had been eight years ago.

We’d been roommates. Not really friends. We didn’t keep in touch.

Which made the invitation all the more mysterious. Why me? What was I to him? After graduation, I’d figured we’d never see each other again, which was probably how most roommates’ relationships went.

I got out of my car and walked up to the blocky house, imagining the sort of tech bro or trust fund baby’s life I was about to momentarily interrupt. But after I stabbed the buzzer and waited for a few seconds, it was Casey who answered the door.

He wasn’t immediately recognizable. Part of that was his sunglasses. But also, in the years since college, he’d gone for the bald look and bulked up. I remembered him complaining about his thin hair back in the day. Well, apparently that had pushed him along the Jeff Bezos path.

Dylan! What’s up, man? He stuck his hand out, and I received a powerful jolt of a handshake. How many years has it been? Seems like only yesterday when we were playing with those flashcards, and I was one bad grade away from failing math class. I owe you, man. You kept my life on track.

Yeah, I chuckled, suffering from a little jealousy.

In college, you always think you know how your life’s going to turn out, but my roommate had achieved a higher magnitude of success than me—and this was the same dude who sometimes partied until sunrise and slept on the common area coffee table until past lunch, snoring enough to rattle the building.

Nice place, I said, admiring the front door that was large enough for a giant troll to use. It both seemed senseless and impressive.

Thanks. Yeah, you probably weren’t expecting anything like this, huh? The investors have been generous.

    Investors?

This was a neighborhood notorious for its tech bros.

It seemed that I was speaking to another one, after all.

What are you up to these days?

Casey grinned. He’d had work done. I recalled his teeth being a little more crooked.

Can’t say out here, he said. Might be spies.

Spies? Really? Are you working on something?

Cutting-edge technology. Like nothing you’ve ever seen before. I’d like to show it to you. He removed his sunglasses. Look. I never did thank you during college. I mean, I was a wreck. A total loser. And you helped me with my homework and exams with no expectation other than the goodness you’d feel in your heart. He lightly tapped a fist against my pectoral. "Thanks, man. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be here. It only feels right that I give you a sneak peek. And I’d like to give you
