A CHRISTMAS WITHOUT MOTHER

Somehow, Christmas has lost its magic, the same year

you went to live with the angels, all my best

Christmas is pure memories;

the excitement I felt when

I painted the entire

Front yard.

Choosing the colors for the veranda and painting

it in perfection, as you and Dad marveled

at the job of a ten-year-old.

The big giant ham that

Dad brought home.

The tantalizing scent of bacon or ackee, our national dish,

no need to make a wish because everything that

I wished for was my existing reality.

We never get to eat lettuce

and tomatoes every

day but it was sure

on our plate

on Christmas

Day.

We did not eat chicken or beef every day, but

it was sure on our dish on Christmas Day.

We never bought new decoration

every year, but we had lots to

choose from the old ones

that were stored in excellent

condition, kept in a box

under the bed.

We chose decoration that suited the color

of Mama's curtain for that year.

Everyone helped to create

beauty; those who were too short

for heights would surely grab

a chair. We did not make it

a tradition to exchange

presents as the

gift in our heart was to

have all family

present.

When loved ones far away would come home on Christmas
