    Chapter One: Wicked Confectionaries

It has been months since we last laid eyes upon my old friend from France, Jacques Rameau. Though Dullon Collins had given his consent to hiding him within the workings of one of his coal mines, the deserting French army captain presumably made other plans for himself once in Dublin. There is some part of me that fears he may have been captured and returned to be tormented and executed at the hands of his superiors, but that perhaps is a moot point. France has fallen to their Prussian and German adversaries and for now a new government is installed to lead the French people. War is over on the continent, though the outcome appears difficult for those in Paris to accept.

I like this one, Emma tells me as she dabs her mouth with a small napkin. It tastes like Belgian chocolate, but with a touch of cinnamon.

Ah, it is one of our most popular confectioneries, Mr. Crandle tells us. John Crandle is the proprietor of Crandle’s Sweets in Southampton and likely one of the most talented crafters of sweets anywhere in England. My wife specifically requested we visit his establishment once we decided to host a gathering of some of our friends next week. According to her, sweets are a must in order to satisfy the culinary whims of those we expect to host.

‘Tis lovely, I admit as I finish a small bite of the dark sweet. However, the cake is delightful as well. It is light on the tongue and very satisfying as it fills the mouth. Red wine would go very nicely with such a sweet treat.

It would, sir, indeed, Mr. Crandle concurs. We would certainly be willing to add chocolate peel to the top as well, if that would meet your taste.

It would not, I reply. Looking at Emma, I ask, How many does this make, my love?

She turns her attention to a small sheet of paper before her. Six.

Six sweets, Mr. Crandle. Do you have a tally for the cost of these six for our guests?

One moment, sir. The proprietor of the shop turns and walks to a small bar nearby and removes a pen from its ink well. He makes quick work of jotting down the prices for each and then adds them together for our final charge. Returning, Mr. Crandle quietly hands me the estimated bill.

Good heavens, man, I say with a chuckle. ‘Tis robbery at its finest.

Emma reaches and takes the small sheet of paper from my hand. Oh, goodness.

It is a fair price, Mr. Hutchins. I serve only the finest sweets to the finest people, and the cost for me is already quite extravagant.

I shake my head. These charges are a wicked thing, Mr. Crandle.

The only thing wicked concerning this estimate is that your guests will be served my wicked confectionaries. He smiles. Of course, I understand that you are new to my clientele list, so I am willing to deduct one pound from the total cost if that aids in your decision.

Emma reaches over and puts her hand on my arm. She has pleaded with me to pay a visit to this very shop in search of the finest treats with which to entertain our guests. The cost matters not to either of us, as we have more than ample funds to fulfill the order. For me, it is a matter of principle. However, even principle must be pushed aside in order to give our guests an experience truly deserving of their relationship to us.

Alright, Mr. Crandle, I reply as I nod my head. Not one iota fewer pieces, though. For such a great deal of money, they should be the toast of our dinner party.

They will be, sir, he promises with a smile. You will be happy with every bite of my finest sweets. I sign the bill of order in the presence of my wife and the rotund man before us. He tucks it into his apron pocket and says, Shall I treat you to a glass of Chablis to celebrate this agreement?

That would be lovely, Emma replies, causing Mr. Crandle to turn and go toward the small bar to leave the room and retrieve a bottle of wine.

Chablis, I say while scowling. Of course he can afford chablis after I have signed for the order.

My wife smiles sweetly at me. Her eyes, full of life and enticing to any man, seem to dance within her head. I love Emma with all my heart, and she
