Introductory Words

The church of Jesus Christ is beautiful to him. His death and resurrection made her creation possible, and she is worth every bit of sacrifice and agony that he suffered on her behalf. She is still as beautiful to him as she was in the first century. Why is this so? Jesus Christ is still her Lord. He is still the head of the church, and she is his body. The Lord redeemed her and brought her out of the world to make her his own. The things that make the church beautiful are the work of Christ himself as he continues to build her for his own glory. He created her, sustains her, cleanses her, and continues to satisfy her with his truth so that he may present her unto himself as a glorious church without spot or wrinkle (Ephesians 5).

His church is beautiful because she has the best diet she could possibly have. She eats and drinks of Christ. It is not what this world, or even religion, considers the best food, but it is what Christ is giving her. In the words of the Canaanite woman, sometimes they are only crumbs that fall from their masters' table. However, this is enough. Throughout her history, the church has not only survived on these crumbs, she has thrived on them. Most people reject the crumbs; nevertheless, they produce spiritual fruit that is pleasing unto the Lord. None of us like tribulation, suffering, persecution, and trials; nevertheless, these are the very things that produce an eternal weight of glory—invisible to most but not to Christ. The work of the cross is still crucial in dealing with our old nature along with the innermost work of the Spirit of God in the church so that she may be a pleasant aroma unto the Lord and a powerful testimony to the world around her.

The Lord prepares a table for us, his sheep in the presence of [our] enemies. Even while the church is slandered and persecuted, the Lord feeds her with his bread from heaven. The food of the Christian is still to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work (John 4:34).

To please the Lord, to be a testimony in this world, to express the life of the Lord, to be one with him—that is the purpose of the church. May she fulfill this purpose for the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:12).

The following are tidbits that have kept me from starving and dying on the vine.

I can only hope that the few bread crumbs that have fed me during my ongoing journey may be multiplied by the Lord and feed many more who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness.

The Lord's little ones are the hungry, the lowly, the despised, the weak of this world. But they have been chosen by the Lord himself. To them, God's riches are found in spiritual fruit, not earthly possessions. They need to hear from the Lord. They flourish if they have faith, joy, love, righteousness. They rejoice when they are knowing their God. So on a cautionary note, if you are one who is enjoying good pasture, please leave enough for those who come after you. Do not trample the good pasture or muddy the clear water (Ezekiel 34:18–19).

If you are content where you are, these bread crumbs are not for you. Feel free to sweep them out the door if they are offensive to you. But please allow the lost sheep, the hungry, the weak, the poor, the blind, the bitter, the scattered and broken to find some solace and nourishment in these words and be to God the aroma of Christ.
