‘I got a glitter pen!’ said Mira in excitement as she peered into her party bag. As well as the pen there was a pot of sparkly slime and a Unicorn Attax card.
‘Let me see!’ said her sister Rani, leaning over.
‘Hmm. Your glitter pen looks glitterier than mine.’ Rani made a lunge for Mira’s party bag, but
Mira snatched it away just in time.
‘Rani, all the party bags are exactly the same,’ said their Aunty Sindhu.
‘Except Mira has purple slime and I’ve got green,
AND she has a Unicorn Attax card that I need,’ said Rani grumpily. She paused. ‘Hey, look at that weird birthday hat,’ she said, pointing behind Mira.
Mira looked round. She couldn’t see a weird birthday hat. All she could see was some of her cousins playing Pin the Tail on the Robot Sloth.
‘Ha!’ said Rani, grabbing Mira’s party bag and chucking her own at Mira before running away.
‘Hey!’ said Mira.
She set off after Rani but was blocked by their aunty, who was carrying a giant rainbow cake into the room. Aunty Sindhu and Uncle Jim began cutting the cake up and wrapping the slices in bright yellow napkins.
Aunty Sindhu had made the cake for Mira’s cousin, Dev. She made amazing cakes for Mira and Rani’s birthdays, too. And she always made whatever they asked for, even the year that Mira asked for an angry hamster cake. This year, Dev had asked for a giant unicorn poo cake, so that’s what Aunty Sindhu had made.
It was magnificent – sparkly and poo-shaped and in all the colours of the rainbow.
Mira grinned as she slipped the cake into her swapped party bag. Even though Rani had stolen her slime and Unicorn Attax card, her cousin’s birthday party had still been super fun – and the
