The Recurring Dream - Billy Arcand

    The Dream

Frank. Is there some sort of sale going on with these TVs? Why are so many people here?

Person. You have to be kidding, right? You don’t know why? The president is going to be on any minute with his address to the nation. He’ll be giving out some medals. And here he is now! Can someone please turn up the TVs so we can hear better back here? Turn a bunch of them up.

President. Good evening, my fellow Americans and all who are watching around the world. I want to thank all of you for being here tonight. This night will go down in history as the new birth of America. Today, we celebrate an achievement that we struggled with for these lase twenty years. Just when we thought it was all over, God came through. Some are saddened, most are happy, and some of you have mixed emotions and don’t know what to think. Well, we can finally put this to rest. We do not have to exhaust ourselves anymore trying to save America from falling. We can put all this to rest. Tonight these people will receive the highest medal a president can give. One hundred and twenty people from all over the US will receive a special medal never given out before in history, the Gold Medal President’s Award for saving America, which my staff founded, for saving our country from collapse and restoring this great nation back to God. These people had a tremendous impact on the achievement our great nation accomplished in the past twenty years. They will be remembered in history. I declare June 9 as One Hundred Twenty Day. One hundred and twenty people gave their whole body and mind to restore this great nation back to its Christian roots. Most were tortured in ways we just cannot believe. They were imprisoned, and their families suffered, but they stayed with the fight for our freedom. If it weren’t for them, we would be prisoners in our own homes, and our freedom of religion and choice of careers would have been gone forever. We can now go back to the school of our choice and get a college degree in whatever we desire. Small businesses and mom-and-pop stores will be able to open back up. Our children will be able to be children and not have to worry about being sent off to child labor camps. Government, as we knew it these past twenty years, will no longer be our taskmasters. Last of all, I want to thank you, the American people, who said, Enough is enough. You got together, you all worked together with these one hundred and twenty people and helped them accomplish what we all were hoping for, and today it’s a reality. As we begin this event, let’s all stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance. Attention, shoppers, the store will be closing in fifteen minutes.

    Sunday Morning

Judy. Honey, honey, wake up! It’s time to get up.

Frank. Sweetheart, I was dreaming about the president again. It was so real. Like no other dream I ever had.

Judy. I’ll put on the coffee. We need to be on the road by eight. So what was it this time?

Frank. He was talking a lot about where our country has been in the past. Well, it’s so hard to remember in detail. I was in a store in the TV department. The president came on, and everyone stopped what they were doing, even the employees. No one was shopping. They were so interested in what the president had to say. Everyone was greatly concerned. They were glued to the TVs. I looked around at the people and saw great emotion on their faces.

    Judy. Like what?

Frank. Some were crying tears of great joy, and some were very angry.

Judy. Well, what was he saying?

Frank. All kinds of things our country suffered. I can’t remember everything, but I do remember that it’s not good if it does turn out to be true. Something about one hundred and twenty people saving our country.

Judy. Well, don’t make a big thing out of it, honey. It’s probably nothing.

Frank. I have this feeling it’s from God.

Judy. The Bible does say God would give us special dreams and talk to us in the last days through dreams and visions. I think you should keep a pad and paper handy to write down the dream as soon as you wake up.

Frank. Okay, honey, I just think it’s weird dreaming of the same thing two nights in a row. It’s going to be a good service today.

    9:45 a.m.

Fred. Cathy, you have a nice-looking church. Wow! It’s huge.

Cathy. If you think the building is nice, wait until you meet the people. It’s the people that make it a nice church, not the building.

Fred. Hey, I didn’t know your pastor was preaching on abortion today. Why didn’t you tell me? I wouldn’t have come. You know how I feel about this subject. He has no right meddling with a woman’s private matters. It’s her choice. Anyway, I’m just visiting today because you really wanted me here today. I like my church. I’m comfortable just where I am.

Cathy. Okay, don’t be so defensive.

Pastor Mike. Good morning, church. Please stand while we ask God to bless this service. Heavenly Father, we thank you today, and we…

Fred. Why didn’t you tell me he was preaching on abortion today?

Cathy. Shhh…you already asked me that. I’m glad he’s speaking on this.

Pastor Mike. In Jesus’s name. Amen. God is good all the time. Praise the Lord! Today I will be speaking on the issue of abortion. I wanted to save this message for today’s service, abortion awareness month. I know this is a very controversial subject, and I ask all visitors to please open your heart and listen to today’s message. Even if you don’t agree with me, I’m sure you will get a great blessing. Before I start with the service, I just want you to know that we all have an enemy who doesn’t want you to get anything out of today’s service. I’m asking you all to be courteous and let’s not have any distractions. Please shut off all cell phones and beepers unless it’s an emergency. Parents, please keep your children quiet. We have a nursery provided. I know how the enemy is and how he tries to distract.

Distraction Demon. Hey, we don’t have much time. We have to distract from every angle. You go up front, you go over here on the left, you go to the right, you go in the middle, you go in the back, the rest of you go on the walls and ceiling, and I want you both to go after the strongest. I want you to make them as vulnerable as you can so they will be easily blinded and distracted. We have to plug their ears and blind their eyes and heart. Go now! If you don’t do what I say, I will see to it that you suffer for your lack of cooperation. I don’t want any excuses. Do you all hear me? Hurry up. Church is about to begin.

Distracting Thoughts. What in the world is that lady doing over there?

Distracting Thoughts. I wish that mother would take her kid out of here. I can’t hear a thing.

Distracting Thoughts. Wow! That sure is a tall woman.

Distracting Thoughts. It’s so dark over here. They should have put in a new bulb before church.

Distracting Thoughts. Why didn’t they close these windows? The traffic outside is so loud. Good, they’re finally closing them.

Distracting Thoughts. I wish that man would stop kicking my seat.

Distracting Thoughts. Why is that guy tapping his fingers? Doesn’t he realize it’s distracting?

Distracting Thoughts. I wonder what that blinking number means.

Pastor Mike. Folks, this is quite a different message I am preaching this morning. Please pay careful attention because I really believe God has something in store for you today. I know you will be truly blessed. Turn with me to the book of Luke, chapter…

Distracting Thoughts. I wish that guy would stop rocking back and forth. Should I tell him to please stop?

Distracting Thoughts. It sure is hot in here. They should have kept the windows open.

Distracting Thoughts. It sure is cold in here. I should have worn a long sleeve shirt, but then I will be too hot after church.

Pastor Mike. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a Son and shalt call h is name Jesus.

Distracting Thoughts. Hmmm, what time was I supposed to be at Dad’s today? Maybe I should have gone straight there instead.

Distracting Demon. We had them wrapped around our finger all their life. We can’t let them see now. We will lose them.

Pastor Mike. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a Son and shalt call his name Jesus. Now I’m saying this twice because I really want you to remember this verse.

Distraction Demon. Hurry up over here. Fill up his mind with stuff. Get her over there now. She’s changing her mind! Put an excuse in her before she gives in. This is war, and I am dead serious! Go distract, divide, and conquer. We don’t have much time left. Get on with your assignments.

Pastor Mike. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his Father David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom, there shall be no end.

Distracting Thoughts. Why am I so tired? I slept a good eight hours. I can hardly keep my eyes open.

Distracting Thoughts. When is this preacher going to be done? This is such a boring message. Why doesn’t he talk about something in the Bible?

Pastor Mike. Now pay close attention to this verse. It’s very important. It has to do with…

Distracting Thoughts. I can’t wait to try out my new GPS. No more getting lost.

Pastor Mike. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? Now, church, in those days, to know someone meant you were married and had intercourse with your spouse. What Mary was saying in our modern-day language was, How can I have a baby, seeing as I am not married?

Distraction Demon. Look over here! What in the world is she doing?

Pastor Mike. We all know the rest of the story. Thank God he sent Jesus to save us, or we would all still be lost in our sin. Now let’s go back to Luke’s gospel in verse thirty-five where it says, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee. God told Mary that Jesus would be the Son of God to save the world. Now this is the part I really don’t want you to miss! Let’s read verse 36, where it says, ‘‘And behold, thy cousin Elisabeth shall conceive in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. In other words, she was not able to have a child. For with God, nothing shall be impossible. Verse 39 says that Mary arose with haste. She was excited! She ran into the city of Judah and met Elisabeth. Get this now, church. When Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb for joy, and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. We all know this was John the Baptist. The baby in Elisabeth sensed the baby in Mary when they met each other. Verse forty-four says, For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the Baby leaped in her womb for joy. Brothers and sisters, you can’t tell me that this is just some form of mass or just a fetus. It’s a real living creation of God. It’s the extension of two living beings fulfilling both a natural and spiritual mandate. The natural is the actual act of bringing on conception. The spiritual is the Word, which says, Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth." Nobody has ever been born of a virgin, except Jesus.

Distracting Thoughts. Who are you going to sit with when we go out to eat after church?

May’s Distracting Thoughts. Let’s see now? If I wear white, it might not match right, but if I wear purple, it will go good with my black hair.

Jane’s Distracting Thoughts. I sure hope I look okay when I go out with Pete after church.

Sue’s Distracting Thoughts. Wow, that’s a weird dress.

Tim’s Distracting Thoughts. I hope I have enough money for dinner. Get water to drink instead of coffee and get a sandwich instead of a meal.

Ed’s Distracting Thoughts. I wonder why she doesn’t want to go to college.

Distraction Demon. You go over there and distract Jill. Hurry up! She’s listening.

Jill’s Distracting Thoughts. I like this message, but why is it so important? I never saw anyone so desperate in trying to convince us to be pro-life. What if a woman is raped? What if she were too young? What if her parents wanted her to have an abortion? I just think they should leave it up to the mother to decide. Okay, why am I thinking all this stuff? I’m supposedly pro-life! Why am I thinking all these thoughts? I should be paying attention to the pastor’s message.

Pastor Mike. Please don’t let anything distract you from hearing the rest of this message. The enemy of your soul, Satan, wants to kill, steal, and destroy, and he will do anything to get you sidetracked from hearing today’s message. I know it’s getting late, and lunch is on your mind. Bear with me just a little longer. I’m almost finished. Prayer warriors, keep praying. I sense a battle going on with some of you here today. I sense the Holy Spirit telling me to ask you to pray. Okay, where was I? Let’s read another one of my favorite scriptures. Turn to the book of Jeremiah, chapter 1, verse 4 and 5. Then the Word of the Lord came unto me saying, ‘Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified thee and I ordained thee a Prophet unto the Nations.’ Oh, church, do you know what this is saying? Do you realize what I’m getting at? God is saying that his plans for you and me were established from your mother’s womb to be what he has called you to be. What if Jeremiah had been aborted? There would have been no weeping prophet. Sadly, you might say that wouldn’t have had much of an impact on the world. Well, if you haven’t read the book of Jeremiah yet, please do because Jeremiah did so much that it would take me all day to explain what a great man of God he was and what he did for Israel.
