The Responsibility of Spiritual Warfare of the Believer - Maurice Wilcox

    Chapter 1

    Responsibility Is Given

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds).

    —2 Corinthians 10:3–4

We must ask ourselves. If we do not have a personal responsibility of our own in spiritual warfare, why would God give us weapons? Whenever you are given something, it is your responsibility to use it. The definition of responsibility is the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone. So, my brothers and sisters, it is our duty to fight. We can no longer be ignorant of thinking that we have no responsibility of our own.

In Luke 10:19, Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

In the scripture above, the most powerful word to me is the word you. Notice this power Jesus gives was not given to angels but to you. Who is the you? The believers. The saints of God.

The next two words that stand out to me are I and give. These two words, my brothers and sisters, are the transition of responsibility. Notice Jesus could have delegated an angel for this, but the transition of the responsibility was so personal to Jesus that He gives it Himself. So now, my brothers and sisters, as the Word of God lets us know, we have been given power, but it does not stop at just power.

The Word of God lets us know in Luke 9:1, Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. So you see, my brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ has given us the power and authority. For Jesus Christ knew that giving us power is not enough. We also need authority too because satan and his demonic agents have power also.

The Bible lets us know in Luke 4:5–6, And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. Even when we look at the world today with murder, rape, drug addiction, homosexuality, theft, lie, etc., my brothers and sisters, we can tell that these are just a few of satan’s power in effect in the life of people today; but even with all of satan’s evil powers, he is limited. We, as the body of Christ, the children of the Almighty God, have the authority, which was given to us by Jesus Christ. It is like a criminal and a police officer. The criminal has the power, which is the ability to commit a crime, and the police officer has the power to stop them from committing the crime. Both have the power, which is the ability to do, but there is something that separates them, and it is the power and authority of the police officer. The police officer has the legal right to arrest the criminal for the crime he/she has committed. Even though the criminal had the power and the ability to commit the crime, he/she didn’t have the legal right to do it.

My brothers and sisters, this is the same for us. Because when Jesus Christ gave us power and authority, He deputized us to be His holy officers, and satan and his demonic imps are the evil criminals that have the power to commit the crime but not the legal right to do it. It is our responsibility to stop him and to arrest every demonic force that is operating illegally in our life in the mighty name of Jesus Christ!

Many people think and have even been taught that Jesus Christ will automatically do it for us, but the Bible lets us know in Matthew 18:18, Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. And the most important word in that verse is ye, which means it’s your
