I Made it and I'm Grateful - Denise 'Nissi' Gibson

    The First Decade

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

    —Psalm 23:1–2 KJV

Being born and raised in the heart of Philadelphia, known as Philly (love where I was born and raised), made me who I am today. I remember my life at the age of six years old. Some people don’t remember that far back, but oh boy, I remember! I am so anxious to talk about my pure, perfect, innocent child life and God-driven spirit. I was raised in church at a very early age. I thank God for both of my grandmothers, on my mom and dad’s side, who were the backbones and light of my family. Through their help and the Spirit of God flowing in our daily lives, we had a good upbringing.

My mother was a party animal. She never had time to take us to church or talk to us about God. I am the oldest of four children, and trust me, being the oldest, I played an important role in our family. I had to bear a great responsibility (I mean heavy stuff for a child to maintain.) But with the strength of God in my young Spirit, I got through it. (Thank you, God.) As far as my parents, my mother raised us by herself. For me, I always felt like I had God’s Spirit living in me at a young age, so with that being said, I never felt fatherless. I didn’t meet my real father until I was eight years old. When I did meet my father, I said to myself, Oh okay, So you’re my dad? Now I know who you are and what you look like. I accepted him in my life as my dad, and life went on. I was pleased to see that I looked like him, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. (Thank you, God.) I will be thanking God all through my story and life!

Now back to my parents. I love them both, but God is in control here in my life. You will see this in the next four decades (hallelujah). Thank you, Jesus! God is real! Okay, right now I am in the last part of my first decade. There’s a whole lot of things that went on, but I just don’t want to bore you with too much in the beginning of my childhood.

Oh yeah, I can’t forget about the Easter Sundays back then. Easters in the sixties and seventies were about getting dressed up in pretty dresses for the girls and suits and ties for the boys. If you were not dressed up on Easter, you were really looked at as being poor. So my mother made sure we were dressed up, hair done or cut. My mother kept me with Shirley Temple curls. You could not tell nothing. You couldn’t tell me I wasn’t Shirley Temple the actress. She was a young actress in the sixties, and her curls were sharp. I thank God for those days ’cause it gave me something to remember and write about. We all have a story to tell, and this
