Inside the Mind of a Poet

About this ebook
At first glance, my poetry seems contradictory. I can come across as a romantic, wishing for a better world. Then there's the poems where I have an unapologetic point of view at the world that I observe and live in. I stopped looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. I won't sugarcoat the truth even if you don't want to hear it.

Inside the Mind of a Poet - Jon Bracken
Abortion
Immoral, murder or freedom of choice
No matter which side you’re on, everyone has an opinion and wants to express their voice
Is a fetus a human being? When does life begin?
Until the pope and the rest of the Catholic church can stop the priests from molesting boys, don’t tell the rest of us what is a sin
Since the Supreme Court is mostly men, until you can enlighten us all on the subject, what really can you say?
They’re against abortion and homosexuality
Who has less abortions than homosexuals anyway?
When you experience labor pains, raise them on minimum wage without child support
How can you defend the rights of the unborn and not the ones that are already here? You will never hear them answer those questions on any news report
What about the newborns that are being abandoned in alleys and dumpsters, kids living in poverty and abuse, born addicted to crack or has HIV, who’s doing anything for them? Don’t they need love like everyone else?
For people who believe in the sanctity of life and that life is sacred, so why are they being left on the shelf?
Does life begin at fertilization, inside the womb, or when the umbilical cord is cut?
Is blowing up abortion clinics or killing doctors really going to solve anything? Are you really concerned about the well-being of the unborn, or are you just a bunch of right-wing nuts?
You might think your intentions are noble, and that’s fine
I don’t tell you how to live your life, so don’t tell me how to live mine
American BS
You can dress it up with fancy paper and ribbons, but no matter what you call it
Despite all the promises and claims, bullshit is still bullshit
BS comes in many forms; it has many faces
Look around, and you’ll find it all over the place
From marketing and advertising, Hollywood, sports, schools, most parents, politicians, law enforcement, government, and the military
It’s running ever so rampant in our society
The media, big businesses, bosses, the American dream, lawyers, doctors, and TV, but organized religion tops them all easily
The abuse of power and money, greed and corruption
We’re all digging ourselves to an early grave
Didn’t the people who said that all men are created equal own slaves?
Why are people who possess zero talent rewarded and praised? What happened to people with artistic vision?
What happened to the ability to make our own decisions?
I love America, but it is and will always be full of shit
They call it the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it
Animals
Us humans have always felt superior to animals because of larger primate brain; maybe that’s true
At least animals aren’t killing each other because they pray to a different invisible God than to the one you pray to
I’m sure animals just want those folks from PETA and Greenpeace to leave them alone, and if they could speak, here’s what they would say
You degrade and humiliate us for your own amusement, you make us do things that goes against our basic and natural instincts
When an elephant, bear, lion, or tiger snaps, why are we so shocked they react that way?
It’s assumed that animals are stupid and don’t know any better, so let me ask you this
When was the last time one of God’s creature ever tortured, assassinated, murdered each other, performed a human sacrifice, necrophilia, or cannibalism?
Something is amiss
We hunt and kill them, use their hides for the sake of fashion but save others
I’m only stating facts, so I don’t want those overly sensitive PC liberals sending me threatening e-mails or write nasty letters
The sanctity of life and the notion that life is precious and sacred are something we made up to make ourselves feel better
Baby
Born into this world, the miracle of birth
No amount of money can compare to its worth
A precious blessing from above
So pure and innocent, incapable of hate and prejudice, understanding only unconditional love
The first time I held my newborn baby in my arms, I felt all warm inside
Those big bright eyes full of wonder, these tears of joy I can’t hide
A smile that could light up a room
Cherish every moment because they grow up so soon
Baby’s First Christmas
I see the world, and it’s made for big people, and I’m so small
Mommy and Daddy pass me around to Grandma and Grandpa, aunts, uncles, and cousins like I’m a football
People pinching my chubby cheeks or throwing me in the air
I can’t crawl or walk, so there’s no place to run to
People talking baby talk, I’m thinking to myself, What the hell is wrong with you?
Blinking bright lights get my attention, toys and wrapping paper everywhere
Now, it’s time to eat, but most of the food will end up on my face, hands and in my hair
I just want to drink my bottle of milk in peace
I’m getting cranky and fussy as everyone starts to leave
Can somebody please change my diaper because I’m ready to go to sleep?
Ballad of Bubba Clinton
There once was a hick from Arkansas
Who, more than once, has been accused of breaking moral and ethical laws
There are pressures that go along with being commander in chief
So behind closed doors of the Oval Office, an intern performed oral sex for some much-needed relief
Just when the Whitewater scandal was behind him, again, he’s being hounded by the press
For allegations of a semen stain on a blue cocktail dress
He lied to the American people, and his credibility is gone
Hey, bubba, you should’ve kept your pants on
If you want to regain everyone’s trust
Keep it in your pants and control your carnal lust
Ballad of G. W. Bush
There once was a man named George who absolutely doesn’t have a clue
When he was told the country was under
