    Chapter 1

    Growing up

Could this be the day that Alexandra found her biological family? It was exciting to think about. She had been looking forward to the day for over twenty years! Alexandra’s heart raced, and butterflies swarmed in her stomach. Were her prayers answered?

Alexandra’s story started long before that day. It began before she was born. She was first thought of by a wonderful couple Levi and Belinda Bailey who had been trying to have a baby for five years. After so many years without a pregnancy, Belinda told her gynecologist that she and Levi were ready to adopt.

One day, Belinda received a phone call from her doctor letting her know that, soon, there would be a baby born and available for adoption. She was given the name of the lawyer who would be handling the case and was told to call him. Belinda and Levi were overjoyed! After so many years of wanting a child, their dream was about to come true. And just three months after speaking to the lawyer, Alexandra was born.

Surprisingly, a few short months after Alexandra came home, Belinda became pregnant. Maybe having Alexandra in the home removed some unknown stress. They may never really know, but a year and ten days after Alexandra was born, her baby sister Katie came into the world. The sisters grew up almost like twins being so close in age. They had sisterly fights and disagreements, and they shared many mischievous childhood adventures.

At the age of three, Alexandra began to have health problems. Her parents noticed she talked with a bit of a speech impediment, and they also discovered she was seeing with double vision. To deal with these challenges, they provided her with speech therapy and doctor-recommended bifocals. Even though Katie was the baby sister, she took up for Alexandra when the other kids began to tease and pick on her for wearing glasses and her speech impediment.

Also, around that time, Alexandra required bladder surgery. It seemed like God put Alexandra with the Bailey’s because a few years later, Katie required the same surgery. Everyone knew it was truly God’s will that Alexandra was to be with this family.

Belinda and Levi lived in a small community and provided a loving Christian home for their girls. Alexandra grew up in church and became a Born-Again Christian at the age of thirteen. She was also a country girl through and through. She loved fishing and hunting just like her dad Levi. At every opportunity, the whole family would head to the lake and camp. Alexandra loved to kneeboard behind in her dad’s bass boat, bouncing across the wake at what seemed like super-fast speeds. What fun she had on those trips.

It was in her teenage years when Alexandra realized she felt a void in her life. It wasn’t like God hadn’t given her a great life, but questions of where she came from and why she was put up for adoption began to fill her thoughts. She wanted to know her biological family and finding that family was a mystery she knew she had to solve.

Understandably, when she mentioned this to her parents, Belinda became a bit upset. But Belinda truly understood why
