    Beginning

Veronica Crutchfield was born a coal miner’s daughter in a small, three-room wooden house in a hollow called Tipple Hollow. A neighbor lady assisted in her difficult delivery. She was born several months early and weighed about three pounds. On the eighth day after her birth, she was taken to a hospital. The doctors gave her parents a shocking revelation: she had been born with more problems than their hospital was equipped to handle. The doctor suggested they take her to the university hospital a hundred miles away for answers. In his opinion, she would not live a normal life, and death would come before her fifth birthday. She would never walk, talk, or be able to take care of her daily needs. Her parents had no medical insurance or money, so they wrapped her in her blanket and took her back to Tipple Hollow.

Veronica’s daddy carried his baby daughter to his in-laws’ house. They were glad to see their first granddaughter. After hearing the news, Granny asked if she could take Veronica upstairs for a few minutes. She took her out on the porch and sat in the swing. Taking her out of the blanket, she held her up into the air and cried out to God, God, I declare to you that this child will live and will not die. She will gain strength and will grow up to be healthy and happy and live a long life. I rebuke anyone or anything that comes against her in her life. I ask all of this in the name of Jesus, your son. Amen. Granny told Veronica many times to always remember the prayer she prayed over her on that porch.

Many years later, Veronica was reading her daily devotions, and she found Psalm 118:17, which says, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord (KJV). This was exactly what Granny had said to her. Veronica did live and has, after many years of struggles, begun to declare the works of the Lord. There is power in a person’s words, and God granted Veronica’s granny this wish.

Life was a challenge for everyone in that small coal-mining town. Poverty was the way of life for most of the townspeople. They were uneducated, and they were second and third generations of coal-mining families. Mining was a dangerous job, and most of the workers would develop black lung disease later in life. Some of Veronica’s family members would die from this deadly disease.

Veronica was told about her parents’ marriage. Her parents got married, and five months later, she was born. Bella (her mother) had brought shame to her family. In 1947, becoming pregnant out of wedlock was a mortal sin, and the woman would either marry the man or would be sent away to have the baby. Her parents chose for her to get married.

Daniel (her daddy) went into the marriage with a lot of issues and excess baggage. He was the product of a dysfunctional family. His parents were unable to care for him and his siblings, so they went to live on a farm to work for their food and shelter. The children were given to foster families to work for their living. At the age of six, Daniel was given to a foster family. He didn’t see his parents again until many years later. This left a scar on his life. His foster parents were extremely abusive, and he was never treated as a child or shown any love. His job was to take care of all of the other family members.

This foster family made a living by farming. The
