‘HOW I ESCAPED A CULT’

In 2006, when Claire Ashman discovered an eviction notice plastered on the front door of her home she was elated.

It was an unexpected response, but the mum-of-eight saw it as her opportunity to escape the religious commune she’d been living in, alongside 180 others, for almost a decade.

“I was so excited, I said, ‘Oh, I can’t believe this – my kids and I have been waiting for this for so long,’” Claire, 51, tells from her Brisbane home.
