M arkella was a child desired by two families: her parents and her uncle and aunt who were childless. Aunt Athena, her mother’s only sister was praying day and night for a second child to be born and that it would be a girl. Their prayers were answered and a baby girl was welcome with great joy. The only one not present to celebrate was the baby’s father. He had left a month before the birth of his child, anxious to immigrate to America.
His wife had pleaded that he wait for the birth of their second child, but he was unmoved even though he knew that his wife had a very difficult delivery with their first child. His excuse was that he had waited a long time to obtain a visa to the new world, therefore he could not postpone his departure not even for a day, let alone a month.
The irony was that the land of opportunity this young father was dreaming about was experiencing a terrible economic depression that was devastating for all Americans, but was worse for a new immigrant. To leave the comforts of home and family and find himself in this foreign environment without a friend or relative facing bread lines and unemployment was a rude awakening.
At first he wrote to his wife expressing his impressions of how huge was America and how awesome was New York. In time his correspondence became occasional due to his struggles to find a job and make a living. He stubbornly refused to admit that he was having a hard time in America. In those days the mail was carried by ships, and it took a month for a letter to be sent from America to the Eastern Mediterranean. Meanwhile his wife was heartbroken for the newspapers described the depression in details.
Please, Konstantine, come home to your family!
his wife would write begging him to return home. But his pride and ego would not allow him to do so.
The baby girl was developing nicely and the family began planning for her christening. It was decided to have her baptized at a monastery located in the mountains because Aunt Athena had made a vow to do so. Due to cold and snow in the mountains the baptism was scheduled for late in the spring of the next year. The godfather was a friend of the family named Markos, He was a wealthy banker who felt that any child he baptized should bear his name. Thus when the priest asked for the name to be given to the child, Markos declared proudly: Markella! The priest was shocked. What kind of name is that? Is it French? Is it catholic?
Markos, being well educated replied: The child is named after me; Markos was one of the evangelists and was neither French nor catholic.
