    Chapter 1

    The Bucket List

Alexandra had an exciting year finding her biological family after years of searching; having them accept her with open arms made it the icing on the cake. It was a great blessing from God that she was able to find them only one month after she sent her DNA into a DNA test website. During her search she prepared herself that finding family also came with the possibility of the disappointment of finding out some had passed away before they could meet. One of those persons would be her biological father, Fred, who she had hoped to meet.

Alexandra was happy to accept the second-best thing, which was to meet all of Fred’s siblings. She had two uncles and two aunts. Three of them had spouses, and she also had so many cousins she lost count. Fred had been married before, but they had no children together, so Alexandra was his only child. The whole family was overjoyed to meet Alexandra and to know a part of Fred was still here on earth. It was just a great blessing. Without a doubt Fred’s siblings could see Fred in Alexandra with her outgoing personality and being such a helpful, giving person. Of course, she looked like him, having some of the same physical features, especially his nose.

Fred had passed three years prior of cancer, which was a great loss for the whole family, but most of all it was hard on Fred’s sister, Jean. Fred and Jean were close and got even closer during the time he had cancer. She moved in with him during those last few months of his life to help him because he was unable to care for himself. When Jean found out about Alexandra, she was a bit confused and even stunned that she had a niece she never heard about especially since she had been so close to Fred. At the time of Alexandra’s birth, Jean saw Fred most days. Jean was grown and married but visited often to see her father and two younger brothers, Rick and Fred, who still lived at home. She figured she would have heard about Alexandra having visited so often. Jean cared for Fred in his last months, so surely he would have told her then about how he had a child. Jean’s thoughts of Why? or How did I not know? had to come to an end. Jean questioned her younger brother, Rick, thinking he should be able to give her some answers since he was living at home around the time Alexandra was born. Rick told Jean that Fred did get a young woman pregnant out of wedlock near the time Alexandra was born. Rick also confirmed that Alexandra’s biological mother was indeed that young woman. Besides Fred, the only other people that knew of the pregnancy were his brothers Rick and Jace and their father. None of them knew the outcome of the pregnancy. Back when Alexandra was born, most young women who got pregnant out of wedlock gave the child up for adoption, which is what happened to Alexandra. It was the best thing for everyone involved because both Fred and Alexandra’s biological mother were young, who was a couple that wanted to adopt a child. It was a true blessing for that couple to be able to adopt Alexandra. Jean was glad to know the truth and to know it was the best for everyone involved. Most importantly, it was all in God’s plan. After she talked to Rick, Jean quickly and happily took up the role as Alexandra’s aunt. The two of them became close. Alexandra was always open to listen to her aunt Jean and the stories about Fred. It made Alexandra feel close to Fred by knowing more about him because they never met.

Alexandra went over to see Jean one day, and that’s when Jean told Alexandra about the bucket lists. Alexandra was on the edge of her seat as she listened to her aunt Jean share how she and Fred each made a bucket list. Jean also said both she and Fred had vowed to finish them together. A tear rolled down Jean’s check as she told Alexandra that soon after the lists were made, Fred became ill. It was apparent his bucket list would not be completed. There would be no check marks on his list. His dream of completing a bucket list were gone. It was disappointing, but Jean told Alexandra she knew Fred was not up for the challenge to do anything on the list. The cancer had already begun to take a toll, and all of his energy began to drain out of his body.

Inquisitive Alexandra wanted to know all about the bucket lists and what the lists contained, especially Fred’s list. Jean went over to her closet and pulled out a container filled with Fred’s items.
