Poetry Is Life - J.A. Coppersmith
The Strength of a Friend
There are times in life when you’re feeling low,
When you feel you’re lost and there’s nowhere to go,
The world is spinning, you’re just there for the ride,
And you just can’t count all the tears that you’ve cried.
You hurt deep inside, and you’re sure there’s no way
The sun’s ever coming to smile on your day.
The sky rains despair, in buckets it pours,
And you’re seeking relief from death’s open doors.
You vision a world free from anger and hate
And step ever closer to sealing your fate.
Then somehow you feel me, my presence is there,
And I fill that need for someone to care.
My arms gently hold you, you feel safe and warm,
Our bodies are two, but one spirit they form.
From me you draw strength, and you’re able to say,
If you just come with me, I’ll be able to face one more day.
Together we journey, and somehow we know,
That we need each other, so
We can face all the troubles, no matter the end,
And know that we’ve made it, by
THE STRENGTH OF A FRIEND.
January 14, 1992
This was written right after my husband of four and a half years passed away from cancer at the age of forty. I was devastated, and he helped me through, because he was my Best Friend.
So I write this in memory of Val Valdez, with love.
The Gift
As I walk out the door, and look at the sky;
I wonder what God has prepared for me today!
Will I find things I’ve been looking for?
Or will he guide me still another way?
Each day is different from the day before,
The sky, air, trees, flowers—everything has changed.
We look at life, and all we see is what we have,
But do we really see it, or do we rearrange?
We have been given one of the greatest gifts,
All we have to do is appreciate it.
The opportunity to live, love, give, and get;
That’s the gift. The Gift is Life.
Come Walk with Me
Take my hand and walk with me
Tell me of your life.
You’ve lived almost a century,
Through hardship and strife.
Tell me how your life began,
How it was back then.
Things you did as children,
Tell me, everything you can.
The wonders of inventions,
The things from then till now.
The beauty of a sunset,
The wiping of your brow.
The hardships you’ve endured,
The love and peace you found.
The miracles that cured,
The ties in life you’ve bound.
