When He Came
To begin with I’ll start by saying that I was staying in my old trailer that I traded an 85 S-10 pick-up for, sitting on a lot that I traded a 63 Chevy pick-up for.
It was after a back injury that I’d got at a foundry where I worked, and I was strung out on pain-pills and couldn’t move without hurting. I’d played and sang in bars and nightclubs for years, since I was a teenager. Now I’m in my mid-late 30’s and as they backed off my pain medication, I went from being a weekend drunk to an everyday drunk. After 2 or 3 years of being in zombie-land my house had burned, my dad passed away of Alzheimer’s, my x and my step-mom kicked me out, we were staying in an apartment that my step-mom owned and I’d got the trailer that needed work for a temporary place to stay until we could build back. My x said I could stay in that trailer but her and the kids were not going to.
Now I was on my own except for a few friends and a few family members on my natural mom’s side of the family. A brother and a couple of cousins who had their own business and gave me some work and a place to stay till I could get the old trailer livable, they’d heard about my injury and condition and how id not only been kicked-out in that shape but had been served with a peace warrant, and being locked-up, thenhaving to bond out, then being served with a restraining order being locked-up and having to bond out again in the shape I was in you would have to know this area most everybody’s related the truth and the law doesn’t matter unless your related, my x and my kids are related to everybody not me, more on that later.
I’d work odd-jobs from time to time doing tree-work, construction, painting, whatever to make a little money to buy something to drink and some store-bought food when I didn’t have store-bought food I’d eat dandy-lion salad, poke-salad, black- berries, apples, rabbits, squirrels, catch a fish or something but something to drink was priority # 1 for a couple of years, some neighbors moved and had a yard full of chickens and told me I could have them, I would throw some feed out in the yard every morning and they hung around and I had chicken a couple times a week for several months.
After a couple of years of being a full -time drunk I tried to back-off on the alcohol and realized it was not going to be that easy, it got to where I couldn’t sleep at night without having some whisky after drinking beer all day…
Then I was laying in bed one night trying to pass-out and hearing voices of people that I knew were dead calling my name, when I remembered that God that I heard about in Sunday school when I was a kid the one that created everything, the one that said, let there be light and there was, the one that parted the red sea for mosses etc…and I said; God if your real and your still there I really need you to help me, please make the voices stop, I’ve got nowhere else to go and I can’t take this anymore, then all of a sudden I mean boom just like that the voices stopped. It got quite the crickets and Katy-Dids even shut-up and I slept like I hadn’t in a long time slept like a baby.
The next morning I got up and made coffee as usual, fixed an egg and cheese sandwich, id always try to eat something because I knew I didn’t need to drink on an empty stomach.
After the first cup of coffee and sandwich I got a second cup and went to the living room, knowing it was a nice day because I had already looked-out the kitchen window, it was a late summer early-fall day, sunny so I opened the front door leaving the screen storm door closed sit down in my comfortable chair to have a second cup, I’d never heard of the shroud of Turin but
