A special thank you to my beautiful wife, Anna, who though she is now in heaven, continually reassured me that putting my thoughts in print would be greatly beneficial for the ministry and a blessing to all who would read.

To our two sons, Delvin and Darrin, and their wives, Rhonda and Angela, who encouraged me in the ministry of this book, I appreciate your support.

I lovingly dedicate this book to our grandchildren, Bradley Darrin, Alyssa Faith, Darrin Mark, Anna Michelle, and Dawson Seth, upon whom I will continually pray that the presence and power of the Holy Spirit will rest.

    Introduction

The message of this book deals with the importance of every believer possessing the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. In this writer’s opinion, it is not only important, but necessary if the church is to accomplish its purpose in this world. The primary word of this message is expedient. Webster’s Dictionary gives the meaning of expedient to be (1) adapted for getting a desired result, and (2) adapted for giving a special advantage. Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance reveals the word for expedient to be sumphero, meaning, to bring together for an advantage. So we conclude that if we are to have an advantage over the devil and if we are to get the desired result of blessing and deliverance, we must be joined with the Holy Spirit who is the power of God from on high. As you read, seek God that the liberty of the Spirit will be manifested in your life.

    Yours in Christ,

    Chapter 1

    The Expediency of the Comforter

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

    —John 16:1–7

It is certain; Jesus’s concern has always been for mankind. His presence on the earth was so very powerful. It was a tremendous thing for men to be in the presence of the Lord. It was a daily occurrence to be with the Him and to follow wherever He would lead. They listened intently to His words and witnessed miracles both by His touch or spoken word. It was an awesome experience for them. It is little wonder that when He began to tell them about the time when He would not be with them, they were not pleased to hear such a word. They were happy and content for Jesus to be with them. They neither perceived nor understood the reason he had been so diligent in His teaching. He clearly was endeavoring to prepare them so they would not be offended nor turn away from Him. He did not want them to forget what good and great things God can do and will do as men continue to trust Him.

One of the many points of His message which we need to hear today is that there will come a time when they will throw you out of the church. They will do such an act thinking that they are doing God a service. He said they will kill you. Probably that would refer to some people literally losing their Jives for the gospel’s sake. No doubt there is also would make reference to the defaming of lives and ministries until those ministries would die. Yet the perpetrators will think they are doing God a service. Men will do these things because they really don’t know the Lord Jesus Christ nor have a relationship with the heavenly Father. It will be religious fanatics that have never been in touch with God. They don’t know what it is all about to know and serve the Lord. Jesus tells His disciples (arid us) these things so that they (and we) will remember and will have His word to keep them (us) secure when it happens. We need His word to keep us in the face of attacks and accusations that come against God’s people today.

The point of this word is for our understanding of the truth, it was necessary for Jesus to go away, because had He not departed the Comforter would not have come.

God had a plan. God set that plan forth and it begins to happen. Through Jesus Christ was manifested the power of God to transform lives and to minister to and in those who believe, displaying God’s authority and ministry on earth.

Jesus came. His ministry on the earth was a marvelous thing. When we read through the four books that we call the gospels, we learn of the life of Jesus and see what He did. We understand many of the great things He was able to accomplish. There is miracle after miracle. Things that seemed so utterly impossible, and yet Jesus was there and something happened. Lives were transformed, and situations were solved, and difficulties were worked out that would have been impossible to handle or change with man’s abilities. But Jesus worked them out by the power that was in Him. He spent His time on the earth, and it was important for Him to be here.

But now He said it is expedient that He go away. The word expedient simply means, To adapt something for getting a desired result, or to bring together for an advantage. Now you begin to see God’s plan and the reason Jesus said it was expedient for Him to go away. He was simply saying, There is a plan that God has ordained and set forth, and there is a work that He has adapted to get the desired result. The Bible says:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

But if Jesus and the few that were with Him had to take on the responsibility of going to all the ends of the earth to get the message out, to touch people’s lives, it would have been an insurmountable task. For Jesus could not be present everywhere. There were times that Jesus sent the apostles and gave them authority to preach and minister the kingdom of God. They went out on missions and accomplished great things. But they had to come back to Jesus. He sent them out at other times, but they came back to Jesus and He ministered to them again and gave them the power to go on another journey. His presence was powerful. His presence was the authority of the heavenly Father. But Jesus’s presence on earth, great as it was, would not get the world saved. So God had a plan that He adapted to get the desired result. It was necessary for the Comforter to come. Without the Comforter coming, the task would be so great for the few going out and ministering and coming back to Jesus and going out and ministering and coming back to Jesus and going out and ministering and coming back to Jesus, the whole world could not be touched. They could touch a few people, but it would be such a small amount of work that they could do it would not compare to the ministry that would get done if the Comforter comes.

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.

[Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:15–18, 26)

So the life of God, the power of God, the authority of God, the greatness of God that was in Jesus was promised to be in those who would receive Him. There is an end that He is seeking. There is a work that He wants to accomplish. It is the saving of the world, getting people well from diseases, and miracles that transform the circumstances of the people’s lives to solve their problems. Jesus had been doing all of these things. Time and time again we read of Jesus coming to the multitudes and they brought their problems to Him. He took care of them. But it is a big world. There are nations of people. People in distant lands. So how can this mission of evangelizing the world be accomplished? How can Jesus be everywhere?

Before Jesus could be everywhere He first had to return to the One who sent Him. How it is not Jesus in the flesh, the Spirit that was in Him, the power that was in Him has been sent to dwell in man. The Father sent the authority and person of the Godhead that empowered Jesus to dwell in believers to empower them. That is why it was necessary and to the advantage of believers for Jesus to go away. Jesus went to the Father so the Comforter would come to get the desired end of God’s plan, to save the world, to minister life to people, and give blessings where blessings are needed. That is God’s desired end. Maybe God could have found another way, but this is the way He chose.

The word declares that when the Comforter comes into your life He will teach you all things. He is such a teacher that, if we will listen to Him, He will teach us things that are beyond us. I find it very true, especially over the last several years, that even though I spend time praying for guidance and understanding, and I spend time studying and searching the scripture, I often find myself preaching things I have never thought of before. It is not because I have figured out great things in a moment of time, but it is the teacher who is saying the words. He is teaching me as He teaches those to whom I am speaking. It is expedient for Jesus to be at the right hand of the Father so that the Comforter can be here to do the work of God in our lives for His glory and praise.

If there was ever a time when we need the work of the Comforter, it is this very day in which we live. If the church ever needed the power of the Spirit of God, it is right now. Of course, people in other ages could have said the same thing. We can consider the beginning days of the work of the church after Pentecost. There would not have been three thousand souls saved on the Day of Pentecost if the Comforter had not been there. There would not have been souls added to the church daily if the Comforter had not been there. The house of Cornelius would not have been saved and filled with the power of God if the Comforter had not been there.

So here we are, more than nineteen hundred years down the line, and it is still evident that the church can’t accomplish its purpose without the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. It is impossible. For He is God’s spokesman in the earth today. When Jesus was here, He was God’s spokesman on the earth. But He said, "I can’t do all of this by myself. I can’t get to the corners of the earth. So my Father has adopted this plan. I am going back to the Father and Someone Else is coming.

He doesn’t have a different message. He will not do something different than I have been doing. But He is going to do more of it because He will do it in you."

The word says, The world will not receive Him because they cannot see Him. Well, when you talk of the Spirit it gets kind of spooky to some people. They will back away from spirits. But this is the Holy Spirit. He will be God Himself coming to live in you. He will teach you everything you need to know. He will bring things back to your mind that you have known and understood because you have been taught them by the Lord. He will even give you what you need to accomplish His work. It was God’s plan that He specifically adapted to the world’s situation to get to the end He desires. He wants to save the lost, heal the sick, and deliver the oppressed. Without the Holy Spirit it won’t be done. We must have the Comforter. There is an expediency of the Spirit of God in the church. Without Him we are in trouble. But thank God, we don’t have to be without Him.

This word says, He has been present with you. He was already present with those people in that time before Jesus left. They knew His essence and His presence about them. But Jesus said that more than the Spirit’s presence with us, He will be in us. He will actually live within your body. When He lives within our bodies we will get to the expected end. The work of God will be accomplished the way it was being accomplished in Jesus. It was the power in Jesus. He imparted power to the others, and they used that power for the glory of God.

In the New Testament there are two Greek words that were translated filled when it speaks of being filled with the Spirit One of them speaks of having a full source. The source of the Spirit is full. The other speaks of the source being connected to your cup so that it never runs dry. There is a difference. You can fill a cup with water, and you can drink it. But you must go back to the water faucet and turn on the flow of water to refill the cup. If you drink that cupful, you will have to return to get another cupful. That’s the way they were while Jesus was present on this earth in the flesh. But when the Comforter
