Deep within a big forest that was made up of many huge trees and thick underbrush of bramble bushes—some covered with colorful berries, and others with sharp, spiny pickers—there lived many wild animals. One kind of animal was feral cats. These wildcats lived in groups called colonies.
Each colony had a very special female cat who was sought after by all the healthiest males to be their mate. In this particular colony, that special cat, the queen, was called Jinx. This is a story about two of her kittens called Pedie and Jetta and how their lives went from wild to loving pampered pets.
The forest provided a deep soft floor of thick fallen leaves, mixed with pine needles, which made a cushion to soften falls, and a thick warm mat for bedding down at night.
There was a great variety of wild animals who lived in this forest, and among them were multiple colonies of cats. Each colony was made up of many feral cats, some had as many as twenty-five cats of all ages. Each cat colony was run much like a human city. They had rules and boundaries. No cat from one colony could cross over into another colony. Each cat had to learn very young where their boundaries were. These boundaries were very long and had to be patrolled. All the cats did patrol duty at one time or another. As long as an outsider cat stayed on his side, it was okay, but if he or she crossed the line, watch out!
The patrol cat would attack and drive the other away. This was done to protect their young and ensure that there was enough food for the colony members. By keeping strangers out, it would be less likely that all the available food needed to raise the families would be eaten by the outside cats.
The forest was home to a great variety of other wild animals too. All the animals sought mates, had families to raise and protect, and worked very hard to find enough food to feed not only themselves but their young. There are many dangers in these deep woods. Each parent had to learn what those dangers were and how to protect their family, so their offspring could grow up.
Snuggled up next to this forest was a house owned by Rachel and Chris. They thoroughly enjoyed the forest behind their home. They had spent many hours exploring their property which included this forest. They found a well-worn path that meandered through the trees all the way to a spring-fed brook that bordered their land. The path had been formed over many years by animals travelling over it. It made walking much easier, and the sights and sounds of nature more accessible.
Sometimes, the couple was delighted by seeing some of the wildlife that lived there. They saw deer, racoons, possum, skunks, fox, coyotes, rabbits, turtles, snakes, eagles, buzzards, hawks, owls, and multiple cats
