The Dingo – Buccaneer of The Bush
MICK Gilliland and I were pussyfooting along a gully in South West Queensland hunting red deer during the rut when we disturbed a dingo. The warrigal erupted from the creek bottom and ran up the sidehill. Suddenly, he came to a halt, turned around, put his paws up on a log and just stood there staring at us. Bad move. I chambered a round in my 7mm Harvey Magnum and rested the forend in the bipod Mick pushed at me. Aligning the crosswires in the 3-9x42 Swarovski on his chest, I pressed the trigger and saw him drop behind the log. Despite being attributed with great intelligence and cunning, this particular dingo was stupid in showing no fear of humans.
Dingos are curious and often seem to appear out of nowhere. In Victoria I was chopping some firewood when I got the feeling I was being watched. Slowly turning my head to look over my shoulder, and locked eyes with a dingo sitting beside a bush watching me. He didn't spook, instead just got up and slowly walked away.
