Biblical Truths About The Rapture - Brian Baker

What the Bible Says About Pre-Tribulation Rapture

Some say a man named Morgan Edwards may have actually been the first to come up with this theory in a paper he wrote for Bristol Baptist College in Bristol England in 1744, but if he did, it went unnoticed. They say he even traveled to America and had it published in Philadelphia, but it still went unnoticed.

The pre-tribulation rapture theory as we know it started in Scotland and England in 1830. Margaret MacDonald from Port Glasgow, Scotland, was a frail young girl living with her two brothers. The area where they lived was experiencing an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. People were being healed and receiving the gift of speaking in tongues and the ability to interpret tongues.

It was at this time that Ms. MacDonald said she received a vision about the end times where she said the rapture will be seen only by those who are filled with the Spirit.

The events happening at her church were getting a lot of attention, so her vision also got a lot of attention. Otherwise, it too may have gone unnoticed.

There’s not much research you can do on her though. The best I can tell, she may have been about twelve years old at the time of the vision, and she may have been in her midtwenties when she died. (Her vision is included at the end of this book if you want to read it for yourself and see what you think.)

She seems to get the credit for first suggesting a secret rapture; she said (italics mine),

Now look out for the sign of the Son of man. Here I was made to stop and cry out, Oh it is not known what the sign of the Son of man is; the people of God think they are waiting, but they know not what it is. I felt this needed to be revealed, and that there was great darkness and error about it; but suddenly what it was burst upon me with a glorious light, I saw it was just the Lord himself descending from Heaven with a shout, just the glorified man. Even Jesus; but that all must, as Stephen was, be filled with the Holy Ghost, that they might look up, and see the brightness of the Father’s glory. I saw the error to be, that men think that it will be something seen by the natural eye; but ’tis spiritual discernment that is needed, the eye of God in his people… Only those who have the light of God within them will see the sign of his appearance. No need to follow them who say, see here, or see there, for his day shall be as the lightning to those in whom the living Christ is.

    Matthew 24:30–31 says,

And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in Heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

    Matthew 24:26–27 says,

If they shall say unto you, behold, He is in
