Feasting on the Living Word of God - Rev. Roger Cole

    Lesson TLW 1

    The Living Word

Dearly beloved, it is my prayer that you and I open our hearts and let God reveal Himself to us in His Word by His Spirit. We will quote some scriptures as we study, and others we will ask you to read. God is a personal God and wants to deal with us individually for our personal spiritual growth. You must never accept everything you read or hear about God’s Word unless you can prove it with His Word and have spiritual peace with God about it. Let us pray for wisdom from God and understanding as we feast on the Living Word of God. We can study God’s Word for a lifetime and never learn all His truths.

It is our goal in this—the Lord’s work—to lift up Jesus in all things so lost souls will be drawn unto Him. Jesus said in John 12:32, And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

Read John 8:31–36. If you accept the Truth, Jesus, He shall make you free. That is to say, free from the bondage of sin. Because of the sin of Adam, we are all born sinners (Romans 5:12). That’s why Jesus had to make the supreme sacrifice for all the sins of the world with His sinless blood (Romans 5:6–11).

Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father, but my me. He has the right to claim that, for He is the One that died for you and me, not any other person. Acts 4:12 says, Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

In the book of John chapter 1, there is much revealed to us. We will look at a few verses. Verses 1 to 3 says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. We must understand that God had no beginning. He has always existed. Man had a beginning from God the Creator. Thus, this is when time as we know it began for man.

Using verse 14 of John chapter 1, we can conclude that the Word is Jesus Christ. Thus, Jesus is the Living Word. He was with God, and He is God. This may be hard for you to understand. Fear not, God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33).

In John chapter 17, we find Jesus praying to His Father. Read this chapter carefully. You will learn much. Look at verse 5: And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. As you see, Jesus was talking about His existing before the world was.

In Genesis 1:26, we see And God said Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Us refers to the Godhead, which is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus came to earth from heaven to be born of a virgin (Mary), to live a sinless life in a human body with complete obedience to the Heavenly Father, to die a cruel death on the cross of Calvary for your sins and mine, and to rise again, conquering death and the grave so we may have that blessed hope of eternal life in Him. Jesus rose from the grave and lives forever more. Jesus is the Living Word.

May God richly bless you as you study His Word.

    Yours in Christ,

    Lesson TLW 2

Jesus Christ, God in the Flesh

Was Jesus God in the flesh? The answer is yes. Jesus was God, the Son, in the flesh. As we see in John 1:1 and 14, Jesus is referred to as God. In Isaiah 7:14, there is a prophesy of a virgin that would conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel. Matthew 1:23 tells us the same and explains that Immanuel means God with us. The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and explained how and why Mary was with child, and the child shall be called Jesus. Since the child was to be called Immanuel, meaning God with us, and also was told to give the child the name Jesus, we can conclude that the names can be interchanged. Jesus was God in the flesh. Yet Jesus is the Savior of the world. God took upon Himself to come down to earth in the form of man, leaving all His Glory for a time so that He could make the supreme sacrifice that could be sufficient payment for the sins of the world.

Mary was truly blessed of God to be chosen the virgin that would conceive and bring forth the Christ child, Jesus, Immanuel, the Savior of the world. In Luke chapter 1, we see that Elisabeth, the cousin of Mary, referred to the unborn child of Mary as her Lord. Mary said these words in verse 46 and 47 of Luke chapter 1, And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. This woman, Mary, who found favor with God, realized who was living in her body. She referred to the child as Lord and God and Savior. You must understand, even though Mary was chosen of God for this task, Mary was born a sinner, just like you and I were, because of Adam. Consequently, she realized she had need of a Savior to save her soul from eternal damnation. She called Jesus Lord, which means Supreme in authority or controller of her life. The person of Mary, the living soul, magnified the Lord. Her spirit, the innermost part of her (the mind and heart) rejoiced in God, her Savior. Thus, we must conclude from what Mary said that Jesus was God in the flesh, Immanuel, and He was her Savior and Lord of her life. Mary had a wonderful relationship with God. How is your relationship with God? Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior? Have you made Jesus Lord (Ruler) over your life? You must realize who Jesus is for you to have that blessed hope of eternal life.

In John 20:28, Apostle Thomas called Jesus Lord and God: And Thomas answered and said unto Him, my Lord and my God. In chapter 1 of Hebrews, we see God calling the Son God (verse 8). Jesus received worship in Matthew 14:33. Only God is to be worshipped. Angels refused worship in Revelation 22:8 and 9. Man refused worship (Acts 10:25, 26). Jesus forgives sin (Mark 2:5–11). Only God can forgive sin. Jesus has all power in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18). Jesus controls the universe He created (Hebrews 1:3), and without Him, you and I can do nothing (John 15:5). Jesus did many mighty works while on earth. To write all the wonderful works He has done in books, the world could not hold them.

My friend, do you know Jesus, who was God in the flesh? Have you allowed Him to control your life? Do you live for Him who died for you? Do you have peace with God? Do you have joy in your heart? If you died today, do you know your eternal destiny? Is it heaven or hell? Don’t forget John 3:16 and John 14:6.

    Yours in Christ,

The Study of the Word of God

    Introduction

Why should anyone study the Word of God? Your reason may differ from others. But this is quite common. Some want to learn about creation. Some want to learn about the nation of Israel. Some want to learn about prophesy. Some want to learn about God. Some want to learn about Satan. Some want to learn about Jesus.

Whatever reason you may have at first will not matter, as you grow in knowledge and wisdom in the Word of God. As you come closer to the Truth (Jesus), you will want to study so you may have a closer walk with Him. Second Timothy 2:15 says, "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

In studying the word of God, you will learn many things that will help you live the life God wants you to live. By learning God’s Word and applying it to your life, you will have power to overcome Satan. You must understand that Satan is the prince and power of the air. You and I can never defeat Satan on our own. We must do as Jesus did with Satan and use the Word of God to overcome any temptation.

At first, things that are said may be strange to you. Have no fear; God’s Word is Truth. God is not the author of confusion. You must realize that God will show what He knows you need at your stage of life if you are truly a Christian.

What is a Christian? Some say I was born a Christian. Others may say that they belong to this church or that church. Then some may say I am a good person; therefore, I am a Christian.

The word Christian means to be Christlike. In other words, a Christian is to live his or her life like Christ would live it. Please remember, Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. In John 14:6, Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh to the Father, but by me."

As you see, Jesus is the only way to heaven or to the Heavenly Father. Should you die this moment, do you know for sure that you will go to heaven? If you have any doubts, do not hesitate to find out how you can know.

Since we know that Jesus is the truth, we must accept what He says we must do to go to heaven. In John 3:3, Jesus said, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. Jesus goes on to explain what
