CHAPTER 1
YOUR GROWING SPACE: PREPARATION AND TECHNIQUES
Remember how we told you that there are various misconceptions and myths about growing your vegetable garden? Well, the same can be said about myths surrounding where one should grow their garden. Many myths have caused many people to stop and rethink their decision to start their gardening journey. We hear a lot about how the older you get, the harder it is to learn new things, especially with hobbies, and that couldn't be further from the truth. With the right tools and resources, you can achieve your goal of creating a garden that produces the kind of vegetables you want. The right knowledge and correct implementation will yield results—all you need to do is be open to learning and patient.
CHOOSE WHERE YOUR GARDEN WILL GROW
The first step in starting your vegetable garden is figuring out where you will grow your vegetables—the area or spot you will be planting. Most people not well versed in vegetable gardening only think of planting in the ground; however, there is more than one way to go about it. To choose a suitable garden for your space, you will need to inspect your home and yard for what will work best for you. That’s because your living environment and home will likely dictate the kind of garden you opt for. Not everyone will have enough room in their yards to plant; therefore, other alternatives work best.
There are three most common ways to grow a vegetable garden: in-ground—the traditional way, in containers, or in raised beds. Each one of these may or may not work for your space or the kind of vegetables you want to grow. We will discuss each type of garden along with its pros and cons.
IN-GROUND GARDEN
This type of garden is considered traditional, the most adopted, allowing you to grow various vegetable plants. If you choose this garden type, your vegetable plants will be planted directly in the ground or soil. Your in-ground garden will need a good amount of sun; as a result, ensure the area you choose to use has good sunlight exposure. You can do this by monitoring the sun and how the area you consider using is exposed enough for your plants to grow strong.
One of the pros of traditional gardening is that you will take advantage of the naturally occurring minerals in the soil. This may help you save money! Plus, you could avoid spending too much money on fertilizers.
Pros of in-Ground Gardening
You will only need to spend a little time setting it up or constructing it.
You will have more space.
Vegetable roots have enough space to grow as needed.
It will cost less money to set it up.
You can grow a large variety of vegetables.
Cons of in-Ground Gardening
The soil may get too bulky and dense, causing slow water drainage.
There is a chance of possible slowed plant growth due to soil compaction.
If soil quality is terrible, it may require a lot of investment to create healthy soil.
Possible weed and insect infestations may occur.
Soil quality can be challenging to control.
CONTAINER GARDEN
If you don’t have good soil or don’t want to treat your soil and spend lots of money, container gardening might be for you. This type of garden is one where plants are grown from containers such as clay
