Chapter One
Sylvia
I rubbed my hands around my neck to calm myself. The nerve of that man! I am Sylvia Gray, the vice-president of social affairs for Gray Enterprises and the chairwoman of Silver Grays Children Foundation. No one tells me to get out of their face! I worked hard for seven years to get to my position. I will not let some...
Handsome, sexy, and hot widower disrespect me like I was some cheap girl from the bar.
I will not let Gabriel Tatum ruin everything I worked for because he chose to believe his wife's lies. My eyes landed on the portrait of Gabriel and Adam from the files handed to me. Everyone could tell that he wasn’t the father. He had brown hair and light brown eyes that shone with sweetness and happiness in the picture. Adam had strawberry-red hair and gray eyes like my brother and me.
I could stand in front of anyone and declare Adam to be the heir of the Gray Estate and no one would question me. He looked like the spitting image of my brother. Adam even looked like me. Kristin, Gabriel's wife, lied to him so he'd father my brother's son. I wouldn't have cared about it if I didn't need to.
Adlai passed away a few months ago, and his monstrous wife, Harriet, wanted to take everything he owned. They didn’t have any children, so she wanted to be the sole heir to all Adlai’s estate – which was almost all of the Gray Enterprises. I could not let her have what my ancestors had worked fifty years for. But I couldn’t claim more right to it than her because of our family traditions and restrictions.
Our origin was half-Asian, and the families followed one rule all these years. Only male heirs get to manage and inherit the company. The female heirs were pawns to investors. Unluckily for my family, there existed a scarcity of male heirs. In my generation, only my brother, Adlai, was the heir. Harriet wanted to have the family rules abolished to get everything for herself because of Adlai's death.
Unfortunately for her, Adlai surrendered to his conscience and instructed me to find his son. He finally saw that his wife was good for nothing. He also appointed me to be the guardian of the child. Harriet didn't know about Adam, so I had to take him before she found him. I needed to keep him safe. Hood River is a peaceful city, but with a father – a stepfather – working full-time, I could not risk having Adam in the care of other people.
Miss Gray.
Where's Mr. Xie?
I asked the male staff member who walked into my office. Mr. Xie was my personal butler/nanny when I was younger. Now that I'm all grown up, he was my assistant. The old man had been in our family for almost thirty years. He was a father to me in more ways than my real father. The young man was about to speak, but I stopped him.
I remember,
I said. I had scheduled Mr. Xie for a checkup and forgot about it because of Gabriel Tatum.
Where should I drive you today?
the man asked.
It’s fine. I’ll get a cab.
Tthe man looked shocked. I raised an eyebrow and said, I can manage on my own.
The truth? I didn't trust anyone other than Mr. Xie. No one should know about Adam until he was in my custody. I needed to protect him for my brother and the Gray Estates. I need to change my approach with Gabriel. Barging in with the truth would
