    Introduction

The inspiration for all this has developed in the three years since I met Paul Benjamin, Sr., and became involved with Life Centers Global. He saw something in me that I thought had died forty years ago. I authored numerous Western novels (yet to be published) which proposed that the Christian ethic was not only a part of the Westward movement but was elemental. God had a plan. Life, with all its twists and turns, convinced me that what I had to say was not relevant.

Paul and his wife Dawn persisted. The inspiration for my writing is, I believe, from God through his people. Please don't misunderstand; I claim no divine inspiration! Scripture is divinely inspired! I'm referring to the type of inspiration a coach gives their players. Encouragement!... yet inspiration. This is the inspiration Paul and Dawn have been to me.

I'm thankful for their encouragement. I, at least, have made an effort to write again… and importantly, I've attempted to write stories that encourage and inspire others to live lives that count. Someone once said that all that was required for evil to succeed was for good people to do nothing. I think it is time for us, the children of God, to quit doing nothing.

    Chapter One

    A Divine Interruption

    (July 2003)

Doing computer work and making phone calls are not my favorite things to do, however, it’s an essential element of Life Centers Global Ministry.  I had just finished the call I was on and was turning back to the computer to finish the task at hand when there was a knock on the door.

    Come in.

The door opened and in walked a good-sized man, six feet two or so, I would guess.  He wore an inexpensive, but cleaned and pressed, dark suit…a bit snug around the chest.  His short-cropped hair and comfortable looking shoes completed the picture of what I considered to be that of a police detective.  I immediately felt guilty.  Being a pastor does not exempt one from human frailties.

    Pastor Craig?

    Ye… yes…how can I help you?

    Well, I uh…I’d like to…I guess…

Like to sit down?, I asked.

    No…no thanks…I just…well…I don’t know exactly how this works…I would like to talk to you sometime…you know…when you’ve got time…but it’s personal… I really need to talk…but…

    It’s personal, I said.

He smiled, ya know, this is really not like me.  I’ve been trained in all sorts of interview techniques…

He was well-spoken…he yielded to colloquialisms, but not extensively.  He was what I would call soft-spoken, but there was a gentle power in his actions… sort of reminded me of Clint Walker in the old Western T.V. show Cheyenne.  Sometimes they have it on the Western channel, and I enjoy watching it.  He was a gentle giant.

But now you’re on the other side of the table.

Yeah, he smiled again, Oh, I’m Sergeant Harris…Jim Harris.

    Oh, I’m Pastor Craig…Eugene Craig.

We shook hands.  He had good eye contact.  Appeared professional.  Seemed genuinely, a good man.  He was troubled.

Not much more was said that day, he seemed quite preoccupied, and after pleasantries were exchanged, he excused himself, saying he had to return to the station for an appointment that had been scheduled, and had slipped his mind.  I was familiar with appointments having a way of slipping up on you.  So, I returned to the computer for the next battle it had in store for me.  I was certainly overdue to win one of those contests.

Sergeant Harris became a regular visitor to our Impact Center, and for months, the conversation deepened somewhat, but stayed pretty much the same.  We gradually began to deal with some issues.  The first came when Jim asked me if I thought there were any sins that could not be forgiven…and…is there anything a Christian can do that will make them lose their salvation…and…how can a real Christian do really bad things.

And, so began months of real questions and answers.  Jim had investigated some incredibly evil acts…and it had taken its toll on him.  He was forthright, and some of the things he recounted were definitely troublesome to him… naturally, he never gave names or even dates… he had confidentiality concerns… and I understood that very well…so I just let him tell his stories as he saw fit.

One of the worst events he shared concerned the single mom who left her two-year old daughter, we’ll call her Sally, with mom’s boyfriend.  They had been using the gas oven to help heat the apartment and the little girl had made a game of running up and touching the stove, and then she would holler, HOT!.  The boyfriend who was on cocaine at the time got tired of her game…snatched her up, turned on one of the burners, and stuck both her hands in the flame.

The little girl’s screams brought the neighbors, then the Police and EMS, and finally the Welfare Department… and Jim. All the little girl’s fingers were burned off.  Both thumbs were saved…barely.  When Jim asked the mother why she left her daughter with such a person, she answered, He said he loved me and Sally and it would save baby-sittin’ money…oh my baby…my poor baby

Two years had passed, but the scene still haunted Jim.

What can I do, Pastor?, he asked.

The only thing I could say was, Pray.

When I saw the expression that came on his face, I knew that single word had struck a nerve, and I felt like I had an idea what might be bothering Detective Harris… and if I was right, it was significant.

Jim, would you mind if I asked you a personal question?

Silence…more silence. Jim shifted in his chair.  A full minute passed with only silence in my office.  Jim switched his gaze from the floor to my eyes and back to the floor again.

Finally, he spoke, You know, you and I have been talking for six or seven months…and you’ve answered a lot of my questions, but you’ve never been much for asking me any.  Now you want to ask me a Personal question, and I have an idea what it is…and I’m not sure how to answer it.

Jim was a gentleman…always gracious and soft-spoken…still hard to read.

    "Well, why
