Kingdom Lifestyle - Crispin B. Kamucici

    INTRODUCTION

And Jesus said unto him, no man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

    Luke 9:62

In the average Christian circle, it is almost commonplace to see professing believers who don’t understand that they belong to the kingdom of God. And the few who seem to possess some sort of understanding about God’s kingdom don’t know how to live in accordance with the principles of this kingdom. At the heart of every kingdom is allegiance to the king, the sounding board for how believers should live. Unfortunately, many Christians do not understand what loyalty to their king means. They think God is only there to meet their every need and want, and once their demands are not met, they seek other inferior kings who can meet them. This makes them live in conflict with God’s purposes. In the first chapter of this book, I will examine the life God originally intended for man in the beginning in contrast to the inferior life man has opted for.

We live in a world of kingdoms. From the flora and fauna kingdoms to the terrestrial and celestial kingdoms, daily, men engage the kingdoms of this world. However, before all these kingdoms were created, there existed the king who made them all. This king, who was called ‘the Word of God’ in the beginning, birthed everything. (John 1:1-3). He also gave man dominion over all that He made. However, it is sad to note that a lot has gone south since the beginning. Many things are not as they were originally created to be, which has distorted the understanding of even the king’s kids (Christians) about His kingdom and how things should be run in the world's kingdoms. The deception of Eve and the rebellion of Adam, which are the roots of these misconceptions, will be examined in the second chapter.

In the old testament, a handful of loyal men knew what it meant to live in total obedience to God. These men understood the kingdom they belonged to, and they knew their duties and responsibilities. They also learned how to engage the principles of the kingdom, not for their selfish advantages but the glory of their king and the advancement of His kingdom. Some of these men were Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Daniel. These men were single-minded in their devotion to the king, and their lifestyle portrayed the lordship of God over all. Studying and understanding how these men lived would show how God expects us to live under the new and better covenant.

Before the death and resurrection of Jesus, God made temporary provisions so that man could have access to His kingdom and will. However, as the writer of Hebrews stated that it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins (Hebrews 10:4), man could only gain limited access to the limitless life of God’s kingdom. Jesus, the final sacrifice, was the key that unlocked all of God’s kingdom to man. In the third chapter, the temporary provisions God made and His once-and-for-all solution to sin, the greatest obstacle to living the kingdom lifestyle, will be examined.

No wealthy man entrusts the keys to his vault to an untested and untrusted son. This also applies to the King of Kings. In His kingdom are keys, and He gives these keys to the tested, the committed, and the trusted. It was only after Peter accurately discerned Jesus as the Christ, the son of the living God, that He (Jesus) said he would give him the keys of the kingdom.

    Matthew 16:19

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The keys of the kingdom are the principles that grant us access to the unending treasures of the King. They are also the exceeding great and precious promises as revealed by Peter in 2Peter 1:14 that enable us to become partakers of the king’s divine nature. In chapter four, I will discuss the lifestyle that attracts these keys and the principles that govern how we maximize them extensively in the fifth chapter of this book.

Kenneth Copeland stated in his book ‘Receive as a child, live like a king’ is profoundly correct. ‘Today, many born-again, Holy Spirit baptized, Bible-wagging believers have no idea of the full extent of their redemption. They have no concept of all that is available to them-now!’

In the sixth chapter, I will present a clear picture of God’s kingdom, the need for us as believers to understand the lifestyle mentioned in the previous chapter, and the obstacles to attaining this understanding. The first obstacle that will be tackled is ignorance. We cannot access what we don’t know. Therefore, we must become aware of our king and His kingdom. It is also crucial for us to understand our place in this kingdom. We are not mere subjects trying to make a living in God’s kingdom; we are sons of the king who have enormous privileges and responsibilities.

Becoming aware is crucial to living the kingdom lifestyle. But it is only the first step. Our awareness must evolve into participation. However, to go from knowing to doing, we must become interested in our king's interests. We cannot build tents on the bridge of awareness. We have to take it a step further. We have to desire to live like a king’s children. The story of the prodigal son in Luke 15 illustrates perfectly what happens to those who know what they have but who aren’t interested in what the king desires. The younger son knew he had an inheritance, but he was not ready to be the responsible son his father desired. He took what belonged to him and squandered it. As he lavished it shamelessly in a faraway country, he only succeeded in advancing other kingdoms apart from his father’s kingdom.

Once we are aware of our place in God’s kingdom, we must also be interested in the advancement of the kingdom. To advance it requires our commitment, devotion, and unflinching loyalty. Kingdom advancement comes with a huge cost. Jesus spelled out the cost in Luke 9:23.

And he said to them all, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

However, since the fall of man, the struggle to properly understand and align with the kingdom lifestyle has been real. Before the fall, man had no trouble standing in his place of authority and taking dominion. He had no trouble seeing things from God’s perspective and knowing God’s thoughts about everything. But after the fall, it became increasingly difficult to enforce the will of God on earth. We see this struggle play out even in the lives of Christians.

Esther, the queen of Persia, depicts the struggle many believers face. She would have been content to live a quiet life as a sheltered and pampered queen, but for Mordecai’s words. The destruction of the Jews was already determined. Therefore, there was a need for someone who knew how to use the keys of Yahweh’s kingdom to overrule the unrighteous decrees. Esther’s decision to step up to the task is seen. She ended up saving her people and enforcing rules that favored the righteous cause of God in the Persian kingdom.

When we live as God’s kingdom dictates, oppositions will come, as they came through Haman in the book of Esther. However, we are also assured of great victory and absolute triumph. The advantages always far outweigh the risks and difficulties. The benefits of engaging and living the kingdom lifestyle will be succinctly discussed in the seventh chapter of this book.

As Jesus promised in Mark 10:29 -30:

And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, there is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

A preacher once said that the name of Jesus is weighty, heavy, and it takes finances to lift it. As funny as this may sound, it is true. Advancing the Kingdom requires access to Heaven’s treasury, and some keys grant us this access. If Jesus had not known about the hidden coin in the fish’s mouth, he would have been embarrassed by the tribute collectors. In the eighth chapter, I will discuss specific keys to Kingdom wealth and how necessary it is for believers to understand that God wants them to prosper.

The writer of Hebrews reveals the kind of kingdom we have been called into. He calls it the kingdom which cannot be moved (Hebrews 12:28). He also tells us that grace is one potent factor that helps us serve God acceptably in His kingdom. Undoubtedly, the life God has prepared for us is exhilarating and all-encompassing. His kingdom is an embodiment of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost (Romans 14:17), and we have
