    ROYAL BLESSING FOR THE AUTHOR

In my position as the paramount ruler of the source, which is the cradle and natural capital of Yoruba people, I consider it a filial duty to bless the proud work of the illustrious son of the Yoruba people and of our great country, Nigeria.

I, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, the Ọọ̀ni of Ife, Arole Oodua, on behalf of all royal fathers in the world, do write to commend Mr Christopher Komolafe for his book titled Retirement: A Must for Every Life, as well as the website Retirees’ World and the Retirees’ World Foundation, developed to enliven the retirees’ world. Prayers go up and blessings come down; I pray that you shall be blessed and continue to be a blessing to others.

How else does one care for the continued growth of others, especially after finishing a gazetted assignment in the process of life, other than by applying one’s experience in guiding others to continue to excel?

The Lord will give you more wisdom and power to aggregate the strategic theme of retirement; you will live the life that God intended for you with grace, strength, courage, and confidence.

As beneficial to the world as the book is, it certainly must have been a result of work covering several years, including months of searching and researching, sifting and shifting, and annotating and comparing every available piece of literature on every considerable aspect of retirement.

Your book and the website will make a meaningful impact on readers and viewers, and will unite the world as you have envisioned.

    World Retirement Anthem

    We are blessed and knowledgeable retirees;

    Something’s uniting us together –

Retirement, wisdom, and ability supported by grace.

We were once young, and now we are old.

The Lord has not forsaken us.

We make the world. We build the nations. (Repeat.)

We shall not come to the grave but in full age.

We are of age; if asked to speak, we shall!

We were trained in the way we should go and have not departed from it.

    When ends life’s transient dream?

We are only remembered by what we have done!

We make the world. We build the nations. (Repeat.)

When at meetings and someone shouts, Retirees World, we respond in chorus with, Wisdom and ability, supported by grace.

We make the world. We build the nations.

This work is dedicated to God Almighty, the maker of all things, who gives us the power, ability, and courage to do all things.

Also, I dedicate this book to my special and amiable wife for her support and commitment day and night to see me to this height. I cannot but mention the support of all my fantastic children, who are the wheel of progress in the blessed family.

This work is further dedicated to staff of all organizations and to members of all trade unions, especially bankers at all levels and retirees of all organizations, both private and government owned – and finally to all retirees in the world, living and dead.

    FOREWORD

Like death is inevitable, so is retirement. It is the period of a person’s life during which he or she is no longer working, or the commencement of such period.

Although many individuals choose to retire earlier or later on account of personal or financial reasons, after retirement an individual’s needs are usually funded through any combination of sources, which may include a pension plan, a retirement account, a savings account, and/or income from a new job or business.

People retire to start up another job, to begin another life, and best still to live a life of relaxation with no work. Later comes the final retirement.

Owing to the government’s inadequate plan for adults and the aged people in our society, and to the fact that salaries are so poor that people cannot meet their social and economic needs, only a small percentage of our retirees live a comfortable life after retirement.

The ideal and real thing should be that one lives on his or her monthly pension until death, but then why aren’t many companies’ pensions regular? Even those that are regular are so paltry that the sum cannot meet the pensioner’s needs in this dispensation.

The British author Jonathan Clements said, Retirement is like a long vacation in Las Vegas. The goal is to enjoy the fullest of it but not so fully that you run out of money.

Only a few of a person’s major important needs, such as building a house or training children, are usually met during the working period. Not many people are able to complete their houses, finish other important projects, or achieve other things before they eventually retire, let alone have enough money to assist their extended family.

It is relevant that we discuss retirement and the life afterwards so as to better the lot and well-being of our retirees, thereby reducing poverty and alleviating suffering in our society.

The author’s aim, and his advice about being passionate and persistent, is clearly shown in this eleven-chapter book.

Passion comes from what you love to do, whereas persistence comes from doing what you understand. When you combine the two P’s, true success is guaranteed.

The author also goes an extra mile to let you know that there are various opportunities around us but that most times we do not care to note them. Sometimes we are forced or pushed to tap opportunities, whereas at other times we need to work the hardest way before we can grab these opportunities, which is paradoxical. As Tennessee Williams said, You can be young without money and you can’t be old without it.

Our generation in particular is in trouble because jobs are scarce and many of us will be stuck doing jobs we hate just because we need money. Although this may be the right motive for pursuing our careers now, it should not be something we do for the rest of our lives. It is best we search for something we are passionate about.

    PREFACE

Retirement: A Must for Every Life is written as a befitting tribute to celebrate all retirees in the four corners of the world where people have worked and retired, and to encourage people to understand that with wisdom and ability supported by grace, retirees can live a rich and healthy life.

We would be deceiving ourselves if we failed to acknowledge that most everybody wants to be well off, rich, wealthy, and healthy. We are mostly fascinated by others who are already rich and healthy, sometimes in excess. We call them rich people, millionaires, wealthy people, and sometimes the well-to-do.

How did they do it? How can we do it?

These are the questions that bother our mind most days of our lives.

The simple truth is that wealthy people do things and understand them in a way that most of us don’t. Most of us never even bother to search, research, and question our instincts or our mind to discover how we can do even better. We have never discovered ourselves. Most people die with good and excellent ideas. This is why someone once said the most precious place on earth is the graveyard, where the most fresh and most precious ideas, the never launched businesses, and untapped knowledge waste away.

Although many books, journals, and papers have been published on the topic of retirement, these have largely dealt with the financial aspect of pre- and post-retirement. In the real sense, and given how people live their lives after retirement, wanting to know what else can be done once they’ve retired, the need for this book in our country today is not only imperative but also has become increasingly and extremely urgent.

Likewise, the need for this book is heightened by the massive increase in the number of people who have experienced sudden death after retirement, coupled with the poor life lived by our pensioners.

The motivation for the writing of this book is made more urgent by the need for people to discover more innovative ways to develop good lives after retirement.

In this circumstance, the success and failure of life after retirement depends basically on your planning and your target of creating a more efficient life or business, among other motivating factors.

Organized into chapters, this book provides the reader with a clear meaning of retirement, reasons for retirement, types of retirement, life before and after retirement, the main issue of how to survive life after retirement, what sort of business one might become involved in before and after retirement, things one must do to keep a business going, and how best to enjoy life after retirement and before the final retirement, death, which is inevitable for all human beings.

It may seem too late for some people to retire young, rich, and healthy, whereas for others it is not yet time to retire. But to you reading this book, it is God’s appointed time for you to be successful, to live a good and healthy life, and, most importantly, to spend eternity with Jesus.
