Chapter 1

Protecting Humans

I’m standing on the edge of a roof at the top of a large building in a city. It provides a unique perspective. I can feel a cool breeze as it blows over me. It is dark, and I look up to admire all the stars in the sky. I begin to feel as if I’ve been looking down over 80 stories for long enough. I am ready to get down.

What are you doing?

I look over and see Stuart. I just noticed he is here on the roof with me. Stuart is helping me to get over the fear that has taken control of me since the incident. His image is that of a twenty-something young man with straight black hair and a medium build. Stuart has his hands in his blue jeans jacket. He comes closer to me.

I’m feeling a little scared right now. It’s time for me to get down, I say.

Stuart stands a few inches away.

Why would you be afraid? You’ve always been one of the best. This is nothing for someone like you. How could you be afraid? he replies.

Let’s just call it a night. I’m not ready, I say.

Before I start to get down, Stuart quickly takes his hands out of his blue jeans jacket and pushes me. I begin falling down the side of the building. I close my eyes as I plummet toward the cement sidewalk. The words of my trainers from centuries ago occupy my mind. They’re telling me to straighten my back, put my arms in front, focus my energy, and harness it. Suddenly, I stop going down and start going forward. I’ve crossed over into the spiritual world. I’m now moving through the air for the first time in many human years.

It feels good. I go high above the city and just stay there for a few minutes. I enjoy taking in the night view of all the lights in windows of buildings and headlights from vehicles on the street. There are stars, a bright moon, and airplanes in the distance. I try some of my old aerial tricks like spinning and going in circles. It’s almost like I’m new at this and have just mastered these moves for the first time. During moments like this, I understand why God loves humans so much. I go down to the street at the base of the building. Since I’ve not used my flying skills for so long my landing isn’t pretty. After going back into the human world, I hit the street hard. I try to catch my balance. There are some awkward steps before I’m able to grab a lamp post and avoid falling. I’m breathing heavily and trying to calm down. This is a big step for me.

Stuart comes out of the building. He sees me and sighs.

I scream at him, Why did you do such a thing? I was terrified.

Stuart shrugs his shoulders and chuckles.

You chose to be terrified so that’s on you. We both know there was no reason for you to be afraid. Why is being afraid always so attractive to you? says Stuart.

Don’t worry about me. You worry about yourself. I’ll take care of me, I say.

Stuart looks up to the roof of the building and then looks over at me and smiles.

Do you realize what just happened? Doesn’t seem like you know yourself as well as you think. Now does it? says Stuart.

Just go back to the castrum. I’m going to my tectum, I say.

As I walk down the street, I hear Stuart yell from behind saying, You know that Legis needs you. It’s time to put the past behind you. You need to move on and deal with those human emotions that are growing stronger within you.

I choose not to respond and continue walking.

I am thankful humans can’t see us unless we permit them. We all have human images so when they do see us, it is not too upsetting for them. I get to my tectum and go inside. It has the appearance of a regular apartment to humans. They would never see the specific charms or spells that have been placed on it. Our equipment would not be seen by them. A tectum also has a special entrance to the spiritual world.

After sitting down on a chair next to a window, I begin to think about the seriousness of my past mistakes. My human body begins to feel depressed. We are not able to experience emotions unless we are inside a human body. This is a way for us to feel and understand the behavior of humans. Our fear is always that these emotions will become so powerful they could start to control us more than our training. It has happened in the past. Many think it has happened too often.

When humans make a mistake, a big mistake, they can get past it. Their mind covers it with good memories. I wish that is how it worked for us. When we make a mistake, we are given an angelic mark. All of us can see these marks on each other. You are always subjected to treatment based on your angelic marks. Everyone can see the good you have done, but also the bad. It’s the bad marks that always attract attention and judgment. I start to think Stuart may be right, but he’s so new. He’s not done anything yet. Maybe that is the reason his view of me is so clear. Stuart has not yet been damaged by a bad experience.

Tomorrow is the day I go back to our order. Back to speak with those who are in charge of me. I know what they will say. They’ll repeat Stuart’s words and tell me I’ve had enough time. I’ll be sent out again to deal with the demons in the human world. This doesn’t bother me; it is our purpose.

Right now, is one of those times when I envy humans. Ignorance of the spiritual world that surrounds humans is not possible for us warrior angels. Humans normally don’t know we’re around unless we let them. They can still sense us. Their souls can detect us. I’ve battled demons in the spiritual world right next to a human and heard them calmly talk about their headache or how they don’t understand why they’re feeling so uneasy at the moment. Their soul can see what is happening in the spiritual world, but their mind and body can’t comprehend it. One more reason I know God loves humans. He spares them from witnessing upsetting situations involving angels and demons.

Warrior angels, such as myself, are not perfect. We don’t always win, but we are always trying to protect the humans. Being in the air last night felt good, but we’re not allowed to do such things whenever we desire. I should have been in the spiritual world before I went off the building. If a human had seen me falling before I went into the spiritual world, it could have caused problems. Our actions must always serve a purpose. The rules and procedures in place must be followed. Last night was considered acceptable because Stuart is a trainer and we were lucky. Unless we’re chasing demons or doing something to save humans, we have to walk in their world just like them.

A warrior angel can’t turn into smoke and move under a door or go into the ground like a demon. That is how they usually escape from us. Some angels are at a higher level. They are authorized to go into a human who is possessed by a demon and battle it. There are very few of these warrior angels, and they only do this in extreme situations. At one time, I wanted to have this ability. Now, I’m not so sure. I have a confidence problem, but I’m working on it.

We are of an order of angels known as auxilium. Each angel order is broken down into many smaller ones and operates at different locations in the human world. The order I serve is known as Legis. We are created to defend humans against demons. In some holy books of humans, we are referred to as potentates. Our sole purpose is to battle demons and defeat the devil. We’ve been with mankind since their beginning. Humans know nothing about their true history. This is a benefit to them. There are so many things they would not be able to understand. Humans are better off using their limited abilities to comprehend the physical world that surrounds them. It is safer for them that way.

I always struggle to not get into trouble. I know all the rules I am required to follow and there are many. One mistake that is never tolerated is angels becoming physical with humans during the time they occupy a human body. There have been angels, as well as demons, who have broken this rule. They used their abilities to gain favor with a human without permission. This is when a relationship between them often occurs. In human form, we have bodies that were born and raised just like any other human. We must behave just like humans. In the bodies we occupy, the human soul has gone to heaven after agreeing to let a warrior angel occupy it.

In the past, angels made children with humans. We can’t create human children since our human bodies don’t contain a soul but angel energy. Most humans don’t realize that without their souls, they are not able to do much in their world. I think the human idea of a zombie would be close to describing what would happen if they did not have their soul. The physical union between a human body occupied by an angel and a human will always produce a Nephilim. These offspring of humans and angels are usually looked down upon by true angels. This is because they will have some abilities of an angel, but a Nephilim will never be able to do most of the things an angel does. With humans, they are superior in every way. It is a frustrating life for them. They are not accepted by angels because they lack the abilities of a true angel. Most Nephilim quickly become bored living among humans because none of them is a physical or intellectual match for them.

I am looking out of the window of my tectum when I see her coming toward the apartment building across the street. She has short blonde hair and blue eyes. Every day, at a particular time in the evening, she comes home from work. I enjoy watching her smile at people as she walks. She always gets her mail and spends a few seconds looking at it before going into her apartment. I know that she will groan when she receives a bill she hates paying. A smile is given when she gets one of the many catalogs she receives in the mail. I know this girl. I’m not able to see the thoughts or feelings of this human female. I can see her soul just like any other human. I always struggle to control the emotions of my human body when I see her.

The human body I occupy seems to be attracted to her. I dismiss this as not possible. I believe I’m stronger than the human emotions of this body. As I watch her get her mail, I sense something is not right. I wish I hadn’t seen it, but it’s something I can’t ignore. A demon is near her and looks as if he may try to take possession of her. He is looking at other humans, but I realize he is focused on her. I’m not authorized to confront demons right now, but I know I have to act. He will not possess her; I will not permit it.

I quickly run out and go up the stairs and across the street. I get there in the spiritual world just as the demon tries to take possession. Quickly grabbing the demon, I pull him back out. The blonde woman shivers as if she has experienced an icy cold breeze on a hot day. She looks around and sees nothing. She then goes into her apartment building. The demon and I stare at one another.

What do you want to do? Do you want to battle? Do you want to forget about it? How about I go my way and you go your way? What do you want to see happen here? says the demon.

I walk around him. He’s a lower-level demon. Not difficult for someone like me to handle. I’m not authorized to do anything. My angel sword and other weapons were taken from me shortly after the incident. I have no way to defend myself against this demon. I know I have to bluff him.

I should ask you the same thing, demon. You know I have you where I want you. It’s obvious you are new to this world. Maybe your time here should be shortened, I say.

I raise my hand and get into a battle position. The demon quickly turns into a black mist and goes into a storm grate. I’m relieved. If he had realized I didn’t have my sword or any other warrior angel weapon, the demon could have injured me badly. He could have even destroyed me. I look at the name on the mail slot where the blonde girl gets her mail. It reads Angelina Potyney. Now, I know the name of the female human I’ve observed for so long. All warrior angels are aware of their historic weakness when it comes to physical contact with humans. I now understand this in ways I wish I did not.

Chapter 2

Angelic Hubris

I am sitting in a room at our order’s auxilium. This is a structure in the spiritual world where we operate. Across from me is an angel that has the rank of Epoptis. In human terms, he is a high-level warrior-angel commander. He’s the supervisor of all the angels in our order. His name is Kaylos. All the angels in the order have great respect for him and his dedication to our mission. Kaylos is one of the first angels from our order who came to this world. He has watched the changes in humans for thousands of years. Kaylos is known for telling angels that no matter how humans change, the mission of our order will always be the same. We are here to protect them from demons and the devil by whatever means necessary. Like all angels, I respect him, but I also fear him. Kaylos does not tolerate those who don’t follow his orders or the rules that govern angels in this world. He has no problem giving punishment when he believes it is necessary.

His human body is a middle-aged black man. Kaylos is wearing glasses and is cleanly shaven. With his serious tone of voice, he says You confronted a demon today. We both know you are not yet authorized to do such a thing. The demon could have done you serious harm. You have no way to defend yourself against them. Why did you do such a thing?

I know that tone of voice. I know it is intended to upset me. He’s playing with me right now. Kaylos wants to see how I’ll react under his scrutiny. It’s a small test of my ability to handle his pressure.

I was in my tectum and noticed the demon watching the human female. I realized he intended to take possession of her. I reacted and prevented the demon from possessing the human female. This is our purpose in this world. I don’t see how I could have acted in any other way, I say.

Kaylos sits back in his chair, puts out his legs, and crosses them. He is trying to get me to relax and reveal something. I know him.

You could have summoned others. Angels who could have easily dealt with such a lower-level demon. You did not do this for some reason. You chose to take a serious risk. Why were you watching the human female in the first place? Is this something you do often? I’m sure you know our rules concerning such things.

He suspects something but can’t prove it. I have done nothing wrong. I have no control over how my human male body admires a human female. It is quite normal behavior for human males. I’m sure many human men admire Angelina Potyney.

I do know our rules. If you are alleging me of doing something inappropriate, I request you tell me. I do not like false thoughts of me to be among you and the other high-level angels.

He is hiding a smile. He is enjoying this little game.

You must deal with having a human body. We angels are not accustomed to dealing with human emotions or desires. It comes with existing inside a human body. This is something all of us angels struggle with daily. Problems start when an angel forgets who they are and then lets the desires of their human body become too strong. I’m not accusing you of anything. I’m simply letting you know how things start. What happens next is up to you.

I remain silent. There is nothing more I can say.

I would like to know about my reinstatement, I ask.

Kaylos stands up and goes to the edge of his desk. He then sits down on the corner of it. This move of getting closer to me is expected to give me the impression he’s my friend.

Excellent news in that area. Stuart is very impressed with you. I know you’re struggling with some things right now. It is understandable, and I respect it. Your reinstatement has been approved effective today. You are to only do some simple things for a short time until you get more confident in your abilities. I’m sure you’ll be back to your previous level of performance in a short time.
