    About the Author

    This story is…

Set before the series start of Sands of Time, when Ryder has recently gathered his chosen team and Orion has offered to let them stay in his house.

    1 The House - Orion

Orion unlocked the front door with the flashy keys that dangled from the charmed token chained to his belt. It was years since he'd actually stayed in the house longer than a night here and there.

But it felt almost nostalgic to put the key in the lock, turning it to hear the soft click and watching as the old wards parted for him, hesitating only the slightest bit until his magic was recognized and acknowledged.

Between the dark wood accents, deep earth tone colors and grounding runes embedded all along the baseboards, he felt right at home, just as he should.

His Earth element quieted accordingly, despite the undercurrent of shadows writhing along the property edge.

It was very much a house of Earth and Shadow fused together. Just like his parentals had intended when they'd first begun their courting rituals.

He wouldn't be surprised to discover that the dungeons still existed somewhere in the dozens of levels of basement and that the upper floors were balanced enough to keep that grounding all the way through to the attic.

A few cleaning charms, discreetly cast, rushed through the house. Orion was glad he'd dropped in earlier in the week to check that most of it was habitable for more than just himself and close enough to how he remembered things.

Returning home to his Mera's temper wasn't about to happen any time soon and the gift of the house, from his Sire, Gerrard, was truly a useful and caring gesture. His Bearer was staying out of the whole squabble, but he wasn't about to bother her for something so simple as a place to stay. It wasn’t her fault that he couldn’t help but want ease some of the burden of his new friend, Ryder.

He could do this. It would just take some getting used to.

There were still plenty of things left in his rooms back home at the Kuroe-Orseno estate, but he could live without them for a little
