To my faithful readers who requested my ‘rambling fic tags’. This is for you. I now tag this as:
Merrow Soulmates. Soft fluff. They are in love. They don’t understand that yet. Mentions of blood and violence. Awkward boys falling deeper in love. There are cuddles. Meeting the family! The Family is The Sister. Siblings are chaos gremlins.

Double-Checking On The Rules - Lucian
Lucian's nerves manifested in the way that the pale blue-green fins along his arms, fluttered in anxious twitches from his seat on the couch in the front room of the Zahn siblings' underwater home.
Caiden’s contradictory explanations of ‘everyone’ and then ‘just his sister’ had left him on edge wondering exactly who he was going to meet and when.
He was still riding on the happy high of being away from Isle Dredna and blurring through the lovely underwater cities of Nevarah.
A sliver of nervousness trickled through him as he tried to focus on something nearby to keep his nerves from taking over.
It was a lovely room of muted teal, navy and emerald hues. Muted, but elegant and not at all as dark as he would've expected, considering that it was all underwater and thinking too hard about it, was giving him the first stirrings of a headache.
His new—Alpha? Dominant? Something?—had carried him through the front door, across the threshold without too much fanfare. When his chirped greeting was not returned, Caiden ushered him into the front room, settled him on the ridiculously squishy teal cushions of the scallop-edged couch and plopped down next to him.
After roughly ten seconds, Caiden decided that wasn’t comfortable enough and that that was how Lucian found himself sitting on a very comfortable lap with two very strong arms curled around his waist.
Not that he was complaining.
It was very nice.
He certainly had never experienced anything like that before. The underwater house, the pretty furnishings, gentle closeness and easy affection—like the almost tickling nuzzles from where Caiden hooked his chin over one shoulder, humming every couple of seconds.
The vibration pulsed through him with happy little aftershocks and every so often, Lucian would flick his toes and fight to keep his delight from showing outright because it was such a strangely giddy sort of feeling.
There was just something about being so close to Caiden that made him feel safe in a way nothing else ever had. It was almost as if he were a giant shield, holding back the worst of the worst so that he’d be safe.
Safe enough to find his own happiness, or safe enough to gather his own strength to fight back.
It was a novel feeling.
He hadn’t known it was possible to feel like this. No one had ever told him.
No one had ever looked happy to be paired up with another person. Or even remotely glad at the idea of being in any kind of semi-permanent partnership. It'd always been every fighter for themselves.
Then again, in the context of the underground fights, Lucian knew why. Being paired up might mean a few extra treats if they put on a good show, but it always meant more blood and bruises.
Sometimes broken bones.
A slight shudder ran through him.
Caiden’s arm’s tightened obligingly. He chirruped softly in one ear.
Everything alright?
"…you’re sure they can’t find me? Us? I mean, from where
