1 A Late End - Neil
Dinner with the Baronsworths' was a new habit that Neil could get used to. There hadn't been any further discussion of whether he was welcome or how long he could—or should—stay. Bevi simply half-hauled him up from the couch and herded him towards the dining table.
His little knapsack and the few bits of homework he'd tried to complete were forgotten at the prospect of a hot, warm meal. The delicious scents of Renee's tasty efforts had his mouth watering long before he slipped into a spot at the dinner table.
It was hard not to feel something when he realized that the table had changed just enough to accommodate a very specific detail.
A chair.
An extra chair—for him. On the side that Calida and Ty sat, apparently.
Neil settled into the designated chair, his heart fluttering faintly in his chest. He'd never expected that they would do something like that, but no one seemed to even notice his reaction. At least, they didn't call attention to it in any way at all.
Instead, they chattered between themselves about the busyness of the day and how good the food looked. Pleased, Renee continued to bring out dish after dish of delightfully delicious-smelling food.
Everything was piping hot and plated perfectly. Some of the fancier dishes made his mouth water. He'd never even seen some of those before, but it certainly looked good. If it tasted half as good as it looked, he'd die happy.
Years of cafeteria food and the Synder's terrible cooking made it easy to appreciate the bountiful spread on the table in front of him. Even if there had been some options at the Synder's, he wasn't allowed to enjoy it, much less actually eat any of it.
No one seemed to care that he was simply taking it all in. Trying to sort some of the scents into familiar and unfamiliar sides, but ultimately giving up in favor of deciding that anything Renee made was sure to be delicious. There was a calm, steadying aura that was wrapped tightly around her and Neil was sure that was somehow in the food.
Just watching her bustle around the table and the glimpse of the kitchen from his seat made him feel warm inside. She was perfectly at home whirling from counter to table and back again. Her thick, curly hair bounced and fluffed with her quick, efficient movements. The small smile playing about the corners of her mouth left no uncertainty on whether she enjoyed her role in their Circle.
Clearly,
