To my faithful readers who requested my ‘rambling fic tags’. This is for you. I now tag this Episode as:

Soft Space Academy AU. Found family. Neil’s catches a bit of luck. Sort of. New faces in new places. Ben has some surprises of his own. Uh-oh. Things happen. Plot thickens! The Cunninghams are on the prowl…

1 Running Into Help - Neil

Neil had never seen Ben's eyes that particular shade of pure gold and in truth, he only saw it for a handful of seconds, before they shifted back to something that was vaguely closer to the usual flat brown that he knew.

If he'd been any more panicked, he might've missed it. But close quarters with the Baronsworths' and their eclectic group—Circle!—had solved that problem. Instead, it begged the question of whether he'd ever quite tried to put Ben—no, any of the Carlson family—into a creature category.

He didn't know them the way he was getting to know the Baronsworth Circle. He didn't know them the way he knew the Norton family. Kendall's creature inheritance made sense. Elyenka's sort of made sense, but Spencer hadn't volunteered anything and it wasn't like he'd know what Ben's was—if anything—unless he asked.

And he most certainly couldn't ask.

Most of the students kept that knowledge to themselves unless it was too obvious to ignore or obviously disguised as something else.

The rest, the lucky Elite, were able to keep it under wraps with either reputation or money.

-eil, Neil! Ben's hands—warm and larger than he remembered them—closed around his arms again, shaking slightly as if to jolt him to the present. Stay with me—here. We can panic later. Right now, we need information and to keep moving.

Had he ever let go? Neil wasn't sure. His words were sort of making sense though. The rest of it, not so much.

Neil—the shadows—how did it sound? What made you think that they were telling you to-

Disturbing, Neil said, slowly. It was—distorted? Not like a proper voice. It was—it was loud. I couldn't ignore it. There was no ignoring it. I don't think I could've, even if I wanted to.

Ben's lips thinned into a line. A flash of gold flared at the corners, before the dull brown returned. His grip eased, before he released Neil with an apologetic look.

Sorry—I did not mean to grab you like that. I should have-

It's fine, Neil said, quickly. I didn't mind. How far away are those bodyguards?

A dull whispering sound teased at his ears, growing louder when he twisted to look over his shoulder. The scent of something burning—hints of smoke and death—reached both of them.

Ben reared back, as if slapped. What is that-? He gagged. It's-

Horrible, Neil choked out, a hand going to his nose. He wished for a scent charm, but it was hard to think of asking for one when he caught the faintest hint of sound.

    Whispers. There were whispers. Again.

    And they were getting louder.

He could almost make out words, but it was
