‘Mentors’ was written to be a stand-alone read.

However, if you have met James and Michael before, and would like to know where this short story fits into the overall sequence, the events told here take place in the early days of ‘Friends’ – ‘Mastering the Virgin’ - Part One.

That is to say, this is about James and Michael in their pre-Charlotte days.

    Chapter One – Mia

Ah, c’mon. You said you wanted to try this. Jay nudges at me, flashing his eyebrows.

"In fact, I didn’t. You said you wanted to do it. I just gave up arguing."

You liked the idea when Chloe was talking about it.

Being intrigued isn’t the same as saying I want to do it myself.

Arms folded, he stares down at his feet. Well, we’re here now.

Jay, I’m not sure. Really, I’m not.

He flushes red. Are you coming in or not? You said you would.

My stomach knots. If I go in with you, you won’t pressure me into anything?

He turns to face me, hands resting at my hips. He kisses my forehead. Course not. Would I do a thing like that?

I droop my head. My voice is small. Alright. I’ll go in.

Great. He grins, spins and marches for the club entrance. Then, shouting back over his shoulder. Come on, then. Don’t waste half the night.

At the door, the bouncer stands aside to let us through. There’s something in his expression as I enter…

    Sympathy?

Jay’s smile has returned. That’s better. Now, about this fantasy of yours, where d’you want to start?

My voice remains small. "Jay, it’s just a fantasy. Imagining it, it’s all inside my head. It’s not the same as wanting to do it for real."

Don’t be silly. He elbows me in the ribs. If you fantasise it, obviously you want to do it for real. He elbows me again. I’ve read some of those novels you keep on your phone. I know what you want.

It doesn’t work like that… But my words trail off as he heads for the cash counter. Jay, you did promise. No pressure.

    Chapter Two – Michael

    The Club.

    The usual Friday night crowd.

A glass of red in my hand, propping up the bar, James and I wait on what the evening might have to offer. Not the public bar. That is the first point of entry from the outside world, and for the benefit of anyone who wanders in unawares, there’s a strict dress code: which is to say, clothes must be worn.

Here, the inner sanctum of the club, it’s a whatever-works-for-you dress code, and a caveat for the general public: Consenting Adults only. You have been warned.

James and I exchange small talk. The words mean nothing. They’re just filling the space. Between us, we scan the field, watching and waiting to see who’s here and what might develop.

Most of the regulars are in, plus a few faces I don’t recognise. Some are obvious newbies or gawpers. Others are perhaps trying out a new club, a fresh crowd.

A man I don’t know accompanies a willowy brunette with a mass of glossy chestnut curls. Undulating past, she wears
