Seven Days - Aaron Michael Owens
Introduction
Our culture is obsessed with the concept of fear. We willingly subject ourselves to ninety minutes of horror as we enjoy our favorite scary movies. We pay our money to go to amusement parks on hot summer days to get the temporary thrill that is driven by a controlled setting of fear and danger. Fear is something we do not mind experiencing as long as it is in a controlled setting. We like to control our fears. But so often, in the real world; apart from trivial simulations of fear, many people are secretly controlled, hindered, and intimidated by fear.
Fear is that silent battle that many people endure every day. The fear of failure prohibits so many from success. The fear of commitment destroys promising relationships before they flourish. Fear is a great deterrent to happiness, progress, and inner peace. A life riddled with constant fear can impale the development of a person’s identity and personality. Fear will cause a person to not fulfill the purposes that God has placed on their life.
I remember growing up with the constant presence of fear in my life. My family and I often lived in very dangerous neighborhoods in West Philadelphia. I grew up in the late eighties and early nineties which was the height of the crack epidemic. I remember hearing gunshots often, as well as seeing crack addicts walk the streets. I often internalized what I saw. I was not oblivious even as a child to the dangers that most families in our area faced daily.
I began at an early age to focus on the things that I was afraid of. I thought about the bad things that could happen more than what good could happen. Fear made me see things differently than they were. Fear will create mirages because fear feeds off of the energy that we give it. Fear becomes a powerful force in the heart of one that is submitted to it. Do you focus more on what bad could happen as opposed to what good could happen?
The subject of fear is very important to me because of my constant struggles with it throughout my life. I found that fear and trust can not co-exist. When my father was around I feared less. I did not fear as much when my Dad was around because I trusted that he could protect me. God is our Heavenly Father and he has promised in his word to be our protection. God does not want us to live in fear when he is powerful enough
