If you’re like most readers picking up this book, chances are you already have significant knowledge and skills in social work. You’ve spent the past two to three years, at least, in an accredited Master of Social Work program. You may have an undergraduate degree in social work or a related field as well. Now, having reached the termination phase of your MSW studies, you are preparing to pursue licensure or certification in your U.S. state or Canadian province as a professional social worker.

All 50 U.S. states, as well as the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and all 10 Canadian provinces are members of the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB®), the organization that owns and maintains the social work licensing exams. Each state or province has its own licensing terms and requirements. Earning a passing score is a key milestone in your professional journey as a social worker.

    Exam Overview

The ASWB Master’s Level exam requires you to know about many different social work topics, even if you plan to specialize in a specific field of practice. As you engage in content review, think about developing an understanding that is very broad, even if not so deep in every area. You do not need to be an expert in everything! Having a general knowledge about many topic areas is key.

There are 4 content areas covered on the ASWB Master's Level exam:

    Human Development and Behavior

    Assessment and Intervention Planning

    Intervention Methods and Theories

    Professional Values, Ethics, and Relationships

This pocket study guide will prepare you specifically for the Assessment and Intervention Planning exam questions, while also empowering you to be a strong test taker and improve your skills for the entire exam so you can earn your passing score and get licensed.

Content Review: Assessment and Intervention Planning

Social work practice is a broad topic covering both direct practice (interventions to help individuals at the micro level as well as families and small groups at the mezzo level) and indirect practice (interventions to help organizations and communities at the macro level). The term client is used inclusively to refer to any individual, family, group, organization, or community that is receiving the help of a social worker.

The early stages of the social work helping process involve engagement, assessment, and intervention planning. In order to help a client or client system, a social worker must establish an alliance and begin to build a relationship based on trust, care, and understanding. The social worker then takes on the role of information gatherer, seeking to understand the client holistically and arrive at a formulation of the client and their presenting problem in the context of their environment and the systems with which they interact. Next, the social worker and client must collaboratively develop a plan for working together in partnership to address the problems for which the client is seeking help.

    Engagement Phase

The social worker’s first task is to engage the client and establish a helping relationship. Effective engagement with clients requires empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills. During the engagement phase, the social worker seeks to build rapport with the client. Central to engagement is the use of good communication skills, which support the use of person-centered practice. Establishing and building rapport involves attending, active listening, the use of both open- and closed-ended questions, clarification, reflecting back, and validation.

Meeting the Client Where They Are

Meeting the client where they are refers to acknowledging and accepting the client’s emotions and life experiences, and working to help the client based on their strengths and present needs. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a helpful framework for meeting the client where they are. If a person needs help accessing food and shelter, start there. If a person’s basic physiological needs are met but they are struggling with self-esteem, focus your assessment and interventions on those needs. Memory tip: When utilizing MasLOW’s hierarchy of needs, focus on the LOWest levels first.
