CHAPTER 1
M ama! Where are aunt and uncle? They were meant to arrive hours ago!
Elizabeth did not know why Lydia fretted so, as she had little interest in the Gardiners’ visit to Longbourn for Christmas, though she quite suspected it had more to do with the possibility of a gift than the pleasure of seeing her family for the holiday. Still, Lizzy could not help but worry about her beloved aunt and uncle. They were meant to arrive at Longbourn for Christmas hours earlier and yet they still had not so much as received word from them. Mrs. Bennet had not ceased her pacing since tea.
"I do not know where they are, Lydia, or I would not be quite so worried, now would I? Mr. Bennet, perhaps we should prepare a party to search the roads for them? The snow has grown ever so furious!"
Mr. Bennet, who had remained in his chair by the fire, did not share his wife’s growing concern. Dearest, I am sure the snow has slowed their carriage and they have only been delayed. Worrying yourself into sickness will not increase the speed of their arrival.
The Bennet family had spent days preparing Longbourn for Christmas, covering every inch of the house with ivy and holly and rosemary gathered from surrounded woods. Candles had been lit and a yule log was waiting to be lit. The younger Bennet daughters could speak of nothing but the Christmas dinner, and while the older girls kept their manners, they too were eager to eat around the table with their family.
But there was no question that concern over Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner’s delay had begun to dull the spirits in the Bennet household, even among those such as Kitty, who were usually concerned for little more than their own trifles. Jane, who had been engaged in her needlework as a distraction, was at last forced to engage as she too simmered over with nerves.
Papa, perhaps mama is correct. Uncle and aunt are so delayed, and they rarely are anything other than early,
Jane said.
