Unleash 15 Bible-Based Keys to Unlocking your Self-Worth - Patrice Tabitha Christie

    Introduction

Dr Myles Munroe (2006) said, The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but life without purpose. However, there’s yet another great tragedy; discovering one’s purpose and never realising it. It’s like discovering you’re meant to be a global figure and inspire a generation, but you end up dying before anyone hears your message or learns about your work.

While many people haven’t figured out their purpose, countless others have got a glimpse of who God made them to be but will never reach their full potential. Why? Because unravelling the puzzle of life is challenging work, only a few will commit to this noble cause.

Dr Myles Munroe (2006) always spoke about five life-changing questions that lead to the ultimate self-discovery. They are called the five essential questions of life. These are questions about discovering one’s identity, origin, potential, purpose, and destiny. Have you ever asked yourself, Who am I? Where do I come from? What can I do? Why am I here? Where am I going? These questions show a need and desperation for every individual to find their truest self.

Exploring words like purpose, potential, and destiny is essential to living a meaningful life and avoiding the depressing reality that some people have discovered. It’s the fact that you can be alive and not really live. You can spend 75 years in this world and never really live your life as God designed it. Think about it. If you never lived your life as destined by God, can you say you ever lived?

Such thoughts about living life to its fullest potential produce the need to discover one’s most authentic self. The truth is, most people on earth aren’t living up to their potential. Some are on an entirely different path. The few who have discovered their true identity had to undergo a process of unlocking their full potential. Why? Because your true self is trapped within you, waiting to be unleashed.

The Bible, in many ways, describes human beings as a temple or house. When Jesus in Matthew 7: 24-27 spoke about building your house on the rock of God’s word, He referred to you as a person. You’re the house. Also, Paul told the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 6:19 KJV, know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost…? Indeed, in light of these revelations, imagine yourself as a house with many locked rooms.

Now, if someone enters one room, they can’t say they’ve explored the whole house. Likewise, if you have only unlocked one or two facets of your true self, you can’t say you know yourself and have explored all the chambers of your personality. By unlocking only a few doors and realising some of your strengths and passions, you haven’t unlocked your truest self. To unlock your truest self, you need to have the right codes and tools. For some doors, you will have to uncover secrets because they’re coded. But for others, you need tools that can break open rusty locks and lubricate stiff hinges.

This book is designed to reveal these secrets and tools, equipping you to discover your self-worth. Within the pages of this book, you’ll get to confront the obstacles to your greatness directly and challenge them. No matter where you are right now on your journey, you will receive the power to turn your life around. Perhaps depression, negativity, false labels, unforeseen circumstances, and disasters have become the dark chain that has shackled your true self. You’re about to receive the power to lift yourself from darkness to light.

Take this journey to discover these 15 keys to owning your self-worth. I practised the principles in this book and within 60 days I started seeing real changes. Unleash: 15 Bible-Based Keys to Unlocking Your Self-Worth is full of God’s wisdom, power, and principles that will guarantee your self-discovery and success.

    Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Of course, we wouldn’t dare to put ourselves in the same class or compare ourselves with those who rate themselves so highly (2 Cor. 10:12 TPT).

Have you ever felt like you don’t fit in, but you feel like you’re a square peg in a round hole? Maybe everyone around you thinks you’re such a success, but you think you don’t fit the portrait of a successful person. Do you feel like some of your achievements are illegitimate? Maybe you think you’re not as talented or as hardworking as others. For more than one reason, you believe you don’t deserve the results you’ve worked tirelessly for and the awards that you have earned. If this describes you, it is possible you are suffering from imposter syndrome.

    WHAT IS IMPOSTER SYNDROME?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern in which you doubt your skills, talents, or accomplishments and are constantly afraid of being discovered as a fraud (Langford and Clance 1993). This feeling is illogical and is caused by having an inaccurate perspective about your own life. Most sufferers believe that successful people should check certain boxes and meet a particular standard. As a result, imposter syndrome makes you reject the things that make up your true identity.

Although you’d think that trying to measure up to these unrealistic standards should make you more hardworking or productive, imposter syndrome is a major limitation in achieving your goals and realising your dreams. Why? Because it stops you from taking advantage of opportunities that can lead to discovering your truest self. It can make you overlook your potential strengths and cause you to reject the rewards of your dedication and hard work because you feel you don’t deserve them. Imposter syndrome is an enemy that tries to prevent you from unlocking your truest self.

    TYPES OF IMPOSTER SYNDROME

There are different types of imposter syndrome. Some people experience it differently according to their personalities. Here are a few of the main types of imposter syndrome.

Natural genius – People in this category feel like frauds because they don’t achieve their goals as effortlessly as those they admire who are born with these qualities. For instance, they admire someone who’s a natural at music. In contrast, the people in this category have to study at the best music schools and work night and day to sound just as talented as the natural genius. Looking at this example, you’ll discover that comparison is a primary reason for this type of imposter syndrome.

Perfectionist – People in this category believe they must be flawless. So, they often set impossible goals for themselves and risk failure. Consequently, perfectionists are always depressed and dissatisfied with their achievements. The most appropriate way for them to overcome this imposter syndrome is by dwelling in God’s Word as outlined in Luke 12:7 where Jesus says you are of more value than sparrows. For them to be victorious over this, they must believe what God’s Word says.

Expert – This type of imposter syndrome is characterized by the belief that success is measured by knowledge and skill. They feel knowing just a thing or two about a subject is not enough; they must know everything. So, they are always striving to improve themselves. However, they constantly feel incompetent no matter how skilled they are. Hence, experts hold off applying for a job unless they meet all the criteria, fearing they do not know enough.

Soloist – Individuals who exhibit this type are poor team players. They are most comfortable working on their own and may be inhibited from seeking help, believing it to be a sign of failure (Bravata 2020).

Superhero – These folks believe that those who deserve success shouldn’t have any weaknesses, just like the Superheroes in the Marvel and DC comics. As a result, they try to overwork themselves and overachieve to disguise their insecurities. Sadly, they are human and will always have weaknesses.
