Chapter 1
Those That Can’t Do, Teach… (Or Own Art Galleries)
1
There is that old saying, Those that can’t do, teach.
I never liked that saying. Not just because it casts a negative light on teachers of any subject everywhere, but it also doesn’t tell the whole story. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I have personally been taught by highly successful people in their field, whom have had successful careers in business, within the field that they are an expert in, who couldn’t communicate an idea to another living being if their own soul depended on it. They stand up at the front of the room with their overhead projectors and flip charts, droning away in a monotone voice and regurgitating slides without ever engaging their students. On the other hand, I have been taught by people whom have not been as successful from a business standpoint in their field (i.e. they had to close their operation for one reason or another); however, they were great communicators who could inspire and relay information in such a way as to make an idea so crystal clear, that you could understand it, replicate it and implement it. In fact, I would say that they were more relatable because they were willing to share their screw-ups and failures (another word I dislike, because those that don’t even try, often stand back and judge those that do and fail
… And nothing is a complete failure if you go back and analyze all the things you did correctly), and teach you the lessons. This way, you don’t have to repeat their failures, and you can start off further down the road.
At this point, you are probably wondering, OK… so what exactly does this have to do with the price of tea in China?
Well, everything. While I do own a successful art gallery/gift store in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, called Cornerstone Canadian Art & Craft LTD., where we sell Canadian-made art and craft from all over Canada, I am not a professional artist or crafter. I am not a coach by trade (however, I am always coaching people), nor am I a psychologist or psychiatrist. You may be now asking yourself, Well, why should I read this book then?
Because I can share with you that I am a lover of all art and craft, and have dabbled intensely in various mediums, from needlework to painting, to sewing, poetry, writing and photography (my personal favourite, but I love them all really). I have taken countless classes just to see what was involved in that particular craft, to get a better understanding of what our artists at the store go through when they are creating their pieces. (Glassblowing gives me a headache… Wow, that is hard, hot work! But more on that
