The Professor and the Student 3 - Tayu Andreason

    Chapter 1

Iwas walking home , I’d been to the shops. Just a newspaper, milk and a couple of croissants. I do this once per week now that I have partially retired. I still do guest lectures, sit on boards to award PhD's but these days I spend a lot of time writing. The weather was good, a bit chilly, but with a brisk walking speed I was warm and very happy. I had moved out of my university supplied accommodation when I formally retired and moved into the home I had for a number of years but kept empty. It was a large detached property on a large plot. On a leafy lane that led nowhere. In fact just passed my house was a dead end, so it was very quiet, ideal for my writing. I had only moved in a couple of weeks ago and did not know any of my neighbours yet. I suppose they are all working people who leave in the morning rush hour and come back tired in the evening. The plots on this road are large enough that you don't really hear from the neighbours so you can't tell if they are in or not.

Humming to myself as I walked along, reminiscing about my good times with my old colleague Fiona and my ex lodgers Anna and Alice. I had many memorable times with all three of them. Its been about two months since I met up with Fiona. I must invite her to my new house. I am sure she will like it. I was approaching my house. Just a few doors to go. I heard this strange noise, almost like a conversation but not quite. I stopped, looked around. I was near to the entrance of the house next door to me. I peeped into their drive way. There was this strange lady bobbing around the house. I wondered what she was up to. She did not look like your ordinary burglar! I could not see anyone else around so I thought I would go up towards her and see what was going on. As I approached I said.

Hello, can I help or be of assistance? She looked startled and worried.

Who are you, what do you want?

I live next door, I'm Doctor John Brown. I moved in a couple of weeks ago but I have owned the place for years. I saw you looking at this house and wondered if you need any help.

I'm locked out. I have just come back from the shops and can't find my keys.  I need to get in straight away. Can you do anything please?  I looked to see if any windows were open or loose. I went round the sides and back but all the windows and doors were secure. I came back to the front of the house.

I'm sorry, but your security is very good and there seems to be no easy way in.

Oh no, I need to get in now. She was almost hopping from leg to leg.

Come to my house, the front door is just there and you can use my loo.  The look on her face, as she realised she had a way out of her predicament. And that I knew what her main problem was. We moved off direct to my front door, straight through a very light bushy boarder to my door. I was fishing out my keys from my trouser pockets when she said while standing on my front door steps right next to me, imperceptibly  hopping from foot to foot..

Oh no!  Whoosh, wee every where. She made a move away from me, stumbled on the steps, falling, and I managed to grab her to prevent her head from hitting the hard stone stairs.

The lower half of her was sodden with wee. She was shaking from shock I think. Her face was now very pale.

Lets get you inside quick, shall we?  She mumbled back something about go away, leave me alone.  I unlocked my front door. Turned off my alarm and went back to get my neighbour. I gently picked her up until she was on her feet. Very wobbly and unsure where she was.

Let's take you to the kitchen and sit you down. I led her through the entrance hall straight into my kitchen. It was all very modern and brand new looking because I had only been here for a few weeks.

I put the kettle on to make a cup of tea. Her hands were on the kitchen table shaking slightly. I could see that the lower half of her coat would need dry cleaning. She had not told me her name yet.

I am making a cup of tea. Lets take off you coat, it's a bit wet at the bottom. Her head started to shake now.

Sir, we have not been introduced yet and you want me to disrobe! I was a bit taken aback by this but I said,

I told you I'm your neighbour, Doctor John Brown, I taught Astrophysics until a few weeks ago at the uni back in town. And your name is?  She was still upset and confused. Embarrassed I guess at the unexpected events. Her hands were still shaking but her head was stationary. I sat next to her, placing a cup of tea near to her and held her hands.

"Look, you're safe here, with me. Your house is next door. No one knows about your little accident and no one will know. Now drink your cup of tea, I have put some sugar in it to help with the shock. Then we can talk about resolving your situation with the house.

Thank you. My name is Mary, Mary Johnson. I have lived in my house, next door, for twenty years.

Okay Mary, nice to meet you. I have lived here for a couple of weeks but bought the house  many years ago, just for this time, so when I retired I had a comfortable place to go to. Mary had finished her tea. I asked her to let me ease off her coat.

No, no, I will go back to my home now, thank you for the tea and help. She started to stand, stumbled as though one of her legs gave away. I helped her back onto the chair.

Look Mary, you are not in much shape to go anywhere at the moment.

You must have injured yourself when you fell. Luckily we saved your head, but you did fall onto stone steps. Look, lets get you coat off first. I started to slip the coat off over her shoulders.

This doesn't feel right Doctor. I don't really know you and I'm in quite a vulnerable position.

Okay Mary, who can we call to come round and get you. You call them and if they can't pick you up, I will drive you to them. Mary stared at me.

My phone is in my house. She started to cry a little. I held her hands again.

Just give me a name and an address and I will look up their number. The crying just got louder and more sad.

Okay, we can't find your friends and family at the moment. You can stay in my kitchen until a locksmith arrives alright? She nodded.

I'll call the local locksmith and see when they can come round. I used my mobile to google for a local locksmith and called them.

They say that as it is a holiday weekend tomorrow, they will not be able to get to you until Monday morning. She stared at me again. I have booked the locksmith for 0900 on Monday morning. Mary now slumped with her head on the kitchen table.

I can't stay here, I don't know you. It's just impossible. What will people think?

Well, luckily for you, no one will know. I can put you in a taxi, but I am not going to try unless you have somewhere realistic to go to. She gently sobbed.

"I will go and retrieve your shopping from outside and put it in my fridge and freezer for you. I left her in the kitchen for a short while. It was nice outside for a few moments, away from the drama. The was a large stain on my door step that I will have hose down soon. The shopping was in one of those pull along baskets on two wheels. I pulled it into the kitchen and unloaded it into my storage space as necessary.

Right Mary, I don't want to upset you but outside it is nice and fresh, inside my kitchen it is getting smelly. We need to get you washed and changed. Stand for me and put your hands around my neck. She did not move, still in shock. I picked up her hands and placed them around my neck.

Hold tight and don't let go. I stood up and she rose to her feet."

It hurts, my leg hurts. She tried to sit down again. Slowly I laid her back onto the chair. I went to my medicine cabinet and got a packet of codeine and paracetamol, the strongest pain killers I had in the house. I also got a bottle of fine brandy and poured a couple of fingers out. I took the pills out in front of her, showing Mary the packet. I passed them to her and told to take them one at a time and to take all of the drink. She took the first pill and a gulp of the brandy.

Oh no, that's awful. and coughed.

Next pill please. She took the next one with less of a cough.

While we wait thirty minutes for the pills to take effect, lets try and take you shoes off. I bent down. Of course she had sensible lace ups on. I untied the wet laces. Slowly slipped off each shoe with the left hand one causing most pain. The shoes were sodden.

"I am going to put these
