    A horse drawn carriage clattered to a stop in front of the orphanage. We gathered around the windows to catch a glimpse of our new caregiver. The carriage driver opened the door and an old woman stepped out. Her grey dress stopped just high enough to keep it off the muddy cobblestones. A tight bun sat on top of her head, not a single gray hair out of place. Her wrinkled face sagged into a disapproving frown. She looked down on the whole world over her long, hooked nose.

    Yeah, this will end well, I said.

    We shouldn’t judge her on her appearance, Stacy, the oldest among us, said. We should at least give her a chance.

    The door slammed open and booted footsteps echo ominously off the wood floors.

    Children, gather in the main hall at once, the woman said.

    I looked at Stacy with a raised eyebrow as she shepherded the youngest down the stairs. She gave me something caught between a wince and a smile in return. We lined up in the main hall and the woman paced in front of us, her hands folded behind her straight back

    Let me make one thing very clear to you all. I will not tolerate any misbehavior. You will all address me as Madam or Ma’am and you will do what I say, when I say it. Is that understood? Madam asked.

    Yes, Ma’am, we said.

    "Good. Now then, go wash
