The Professor and the Student 1 - Tayu Andreason

    Chapter 1

I was walking through the heavy rain, comfortable with my wide brimmed hat and long overcoat. It was the start of the summer break after a long teaching session which ended with the final exams, end of year exams, exam boards and lots and lots of admin.

Not many people were left on campus now, just a few single professors and their grad students. Workmen will be arriving on Monday to start the continual repairs and maintenance tasks that need to be done to keep this historic campus looking picture book perfect.

I was about 2 minutes away from my lodgings, the university provide a small flat each to professor. This enables us to live on site to be close to the students should academic problems occur. I had just  emerged from an alleyway between the two 13th century buildings, turned left, walked across a cobbled area, passed some benches that students sit on during the day,  chatting and revising. I came across someone slumped over on one of the middle benches, sobbing. I walked over to the figure, who was getting soaked in the rain.

    Is there a problem?

The figure lifted its head up and looked at me, stopped sobbing and said:

I have no where to stay and everyone I know has gone for the summer.

The figure had the voice of a quiet girl. I looked around, the place was deserted, what should I do, I thought? I can't leave her here outside in the heavy rain at 10 o'clock at night. It may be the start of the British summer but it is unseasonally cold. No, I thought, I'll take her to my flat and try and resolve any issues she has. She will be warm and dry at least.

Come on, you can come to my place, its two minutes away, and you can get warm and dry.

She looked at me, concern in her eyes.

I am Professor John Brown, Astrophysics department, here, look at my id.

She nervously scanned my id card and immediately relaxed a little.

Just until I dry off and warm up, okay? she said.

If that will help you out then that's fine by me.

As she stood up, I noticed she had her suitcase and a backpack on the floor. I looked at the luggage then at her with a raised eyebrow.

I'll bring these, you just follow me, its just about one hundred steps from here.

We started walking, me with a heavy suitcase in one hand and the backpack in the other. She was staggering from side to side, like she was drunk. I stopped, put the backpack on properly, over both of my shoulders, grabbed her hand, which was icy cold, and dragged her along as quick as we could both manage.

We just about made it to my front door, I opened it with my key, almost threw her through the door, went through myself, shutting the door and keeping the heavy rain out. I dropped the suitcase, slipped the backpack off my shoulders, took my hat off along with my long overcoat.

I turned to the girl, she was slumped on the wall, almost falling down, Her eyes were nearly closed.

I grabbed her, took her soaking wet coat off, leaving it on the floor. Her normal day time clothing was soaking wet. I felt her forehead, back of her neck, under her arm, they were all icy cold. I had to get some heat into the young girl quickly before hyperthermia takes hold.

My accommodation was quite conventional for a professor. Entrance, hall leading to a lounge, kitchen/dinning room, bedroom and bathroom. All on one level. Each professors flat had its own heating controls, I turned mine up full. As it was summer, it would take time for the heating to come on. I had to get her temperature up and quickly.

The only solution was the shower. I would use the shower while I filled up the bath with warm water. I put my arms around her and guided her to the bathroom. I turned the shower onto full flow and slightly warmer than my usual setting. I turned on the bath taps, I sat her on the toilet and started to take her clothes off. She had a tee-shirt, which I lifted over her head and her arms flopped back down. Then her bra, I undid at the back and slowly took it off, not wanting to hurt her with the soaking wet material. She still had her shoes on which I managed to dislodge with my feet. Small sports socks covered her feet, which I could not see until I have removed her shoes. Her jeans were more of a problem. They were tight, wet, cold and stiff. I had to be really careful I did not hurt her or mark her skin. I undid the zip, pulled the flies apart but the jeans would not budge. I had only taken a few seconds to get this far and the hypothermia clock was running fast. I reached up to the bathroom cupboard where I
