This is the End

I'm ending it, Hal. She says.

He finds it ironic that the line is so clear it is almost as if she is sitting right next to him.

Harlan still can't believe what he's hearing. These words can't come from his girlfriend of how many years now. He just holds the phone to his ear, basically frozen in disbelieve. This can't be true. He must have heard her wrong. Why would she break up with him? He's given her everything she ever asked for.

What? He says, his voice almost breaking in an uncontrollable fashion.

You're a lot of things, Hal, but you're not deaf. I'm ending it. I'm ending our relationship. I don't want to go out with you anymore, I don't want to see you anymore. It is overs. I hope you understood that, because I can't make it any clearer.

Harlan is still in shock and really can't believe what he's hearing. On top of that, she's breaking up with him over the phone. That is the biggest insult.

Her voice now sounds cruel and uncaring, unlike that first time when they met at his cousin’s birthday party. She was so gentle and understanding. Eudora Samuels. There was just no way that he could resist her. Not that he wanted to resist her. Not at all. Later that night her body was warm and soft and giving. He enjoyed it more than he enjoyed anything else for a long time. He knew then that he just has to have this girl. She would be his life partner.
