APPRECIATION
I wish to thank all the wonderful people who have contributed to this booklet through sharing their experiences with Basic Selves. Special thanks go to my wife, Julie, for her invaluable support and assistance. I am deeply thankful for the pioneering work by Wayne Guthrie and Bella Karish, founders of the Fellowship of Universal Guidance. Their dedication and clarity have opened new (and ancient) dimensions of human experience that benefit us all.

ACHIEVING HUMAN POTENTIAL
When we seek help for resolving troubles or personal betterment, we often discover how to expand our human potential. We learn to tap inner resources that lie beyond our normal abilities. By expanding our capabilities, we gain insights and skills for solving problems. We also learn how to live more fulfilling and meaningful lives.
This booklet presents part of the Personal Self Integration system for assisting us to reach our human potential. Personal Self Integration (PSI) skills help us discover and integrate the Inner Selves that provide or block access to the valuable inner resources we all have. We are blocked from utilizing our talents to the greatest extent or from living our lives to the fullest. We get bogged down in problems instead of expressing our positive potential. Too often we get stuck in a state of powerlessness, too heavy with inertia to progress, instead of using our personal power to help our Selves grow.
When we are faced with persistent problems, our perspective is often too limited to allow solutions. Our perspective can expand, giving us access to previously hidden, underlying causes of the problem. We can perceive options that we did not previously recognize, and we can learn skills for exercising those options. Through this training process, we learn how to transform our Selves.
Transforming our Selves implies that we can gain greater awareness, acceptance and love of our Selves and others. We need to be aware of those parts of our personality that function well, giving us strength, and those that don’t function well, giving us weakness. But we might have difficulty in being objectively aware of our Selves. Our own biases, prejudices, and blind spots hamper objectivity. We need ways to identify and overcome these obstacles to objectivity so that we can be truly aware of our personality’s assets and liabilities.
To become more accepting and loving of our Selves, we need to know our Selves more fully. Great teachers have advised: Know thy Self! How can this be done? With the evolution of psychology, several methods are now available for knowing our Selves more fully. Freud¹ identified the conscious and subconscious minds. Jung², Assagioli³, Maslow⁴ and others⁵ ⁶ identified and began to explore the superconscious mind. The emerging picture of the human mind is shown as a field of consciousness with at least three levels (see Fig. 1).
Personal Self Integration provides us with an easy way to
become friends
with our subconscious mind,
and even beyond that, our superconscious mind.
2.jpgFigure 1. Three Levels of Consciousness
We can now think of the achievement of human potential as expanding the scope of our consciousness from the limited range of the conscious mind into the broader ranges of the subconscious and superconscious levels of mind. How can we do this?
When we try to meet
our subconscious mind, we can easily feel overwhelmed. Although hundreds of books have been written on this subject, contact with the subconscious mind remains a mysterious and formidable challenge for most people. An introduction to our subconscious mind may seem as difficult as having a two-way conversation with the ocean, so a more friendly
approach would be helpful. Personal Self Integration provides us with an easy way to become friends
with our subconscious mind, and even beyond that, with our superconscious mind.
The research of Drs. Wayne Guthrie and Bella Karish yields a framework for accessing subconscious and superconscious levels of mind. Their books, ⁷Pathways to Your Three Selves [1989], ⁸Working with Your Three Selves [2005], ⁹Portals to Your Higher Consciousness [2017], describe their discoveries of Basic Selves and High Selves
