    How I Met My New Friends

    Alex and Irene visited me at my home on the Boulders Beach. Just like most visitors, Alex at first could not believe his eyes when he saw me and my pals strolling along the beach. He even thought that we were actors in some kind of a zoo. But Irene, who I found out later knew everything, explained to Alex that Boulders Beach indeed was our home.

    After Irene and Alex told me that they came from a country called the United States of America, I asked what they were doing in my country of South Africa, so far away from their home in America. We came to visit game reserves and go on safari to meet all kinds of wild animals, they replied. Then, Irene explained that game reserves are special parks where wild animals are protected by people and can be observed in their natural habitat (area where they live).

    I’ve never been on safari and frankly don’t even know exactly what it is, I said. I have lived here all my life, and the only creatures I met so far are other penguins, the fish, the nasty seals, and the sharks who lurk in the dark waters.

    And I always wanted to meet other African animals, but I am so afraid that some of them might be as mean as the seal who nearly bit off my left flipper last week.

    Well, then you should come with us and visit all the wild animals we will find, said Alex and Irene. If you promise to keep me safe, then count me in! I
