    About the Author

    Chapter 1

Larkspur Bei Kynaston regretted how vulnerable she was without the use of her enhanced speed. Especially now, as shards of glassy ice zipped by her face. She scrambled behind a short snowbank, her movements sluggish.

While the superpower-inducing bio-bots changed her DNA less than a year ago, she had already grown used to the advantages of heightened senses. She even missed the constant buzz her gifts of manipulating electricity and fire gave her.

Now, she had none of that.

She couldn’t even tell how close her friends were once they scattered after the attack.

A transparent screen hovered in the air to her right. She glowered at the colorful array of strips and abbreviations, wracking her brain to remember what each one meant.

The green Stamina bar was empty, which explained why even as an anthropomorphic cat character, she was slow.

As she recalled the red HP bar stood for Health Points, something hit the mound she sheltered behind, obliterating her cover and showering her in clumps of snow.

Stifling a yelp, Lark instinctively sprang into a protective crouch, alert for her attacker. Across a small clearing, two tall figures stood.

A woman’s curvy figure was wrapped in a sparkly, light-blue, medieval-styled dress with sweeping sleeves. Her clothes and long black hair rustled in a non-existent wind. A hateful glare marred her beautiful, purple-toned face as she sent ice shards flying toward Lark’s friend, Joshua Cynbel.

    Josh! Lark screamed.

He was too far away. She would never get to him in time.

Unlike her, Josh remained calm. Just before being pierced, he thrust his hands toward the ground, palms down.

Push! His exclamation sounded like a chant.

A strong concussive force emanated in all directions to form a dome around him, shattering the Snow Queen’s attack and parts of the tree trunks behind him.

    Lark paused, eyes wide.

Well, that’s a nifty trick, she thought, glancing down at her own hands. Can I do that?

    Lark! Watch out!

Lark’s head jerked up at the sharp reminder. The man next to the Snow Queen brandished his sword and shield to attack her.

As Conan Cynbel, friend and leader of Lark’s own personal bodyguards, bore down on her, Lark couldn’t help wondering: How did things go so wrong?
