Bearfoot @ Xmas - Melissa Bell
CHAPTER 1
It was four days till Christmas. Lexi Cavanagh had been tracking a particular syndicate of wildlife poachers for nearly four months now. She’d already relocated three times during the course of her investigations, as they seemed to be working their way up the east coast. She no longer knew what it felt like to set down roots or to call a place home. She’d gone from being the epitome of an army brat to a decorated police officer, and now she was a special consultant for the Park Rangers Service. She yawned as she drove up to the front door of her latest temporary housing. Following the pattern along the coastline, she hoped that she’d finally catch a break in the case and get ahead of the trappers before they made it into bear country. She had a soft spot for the big furry guys. She thought of it a lot like the ocean; if you don’t want to be eaten by a big shark, then stay the fuck out of the water, or find a damn swimming pool. Same for the wilderness; if you don’t want to be eaten by a bear, then stay the fuck out of their habitat, simple.
There was already a light dusting of snow on the ground, and her boots crunched as she neared the back of her SUV. She grabbed her jacket and travel bag, then out of habit she locked her vehicle, laughing at herself. Who the fuck in their right mind would be out in this neck of the woods to take her ride? Especially parked right outside the ranger’s cabin. She rolled her eyes at her big city girl style, then glanced around quickly to see if anyone had noticed, before shaking her head at herself in amusement.
As she neared the front door, she stomped her feet to shake lose any flakes of snow that had attached themselves to her boots. She entered the cabin expecting to find a front counter and an office of some sort, but instead she felt as though she'd walked straight into a scene from the 18 th century. All the curtains were closed, and it was considerably dark inside the cabin. There didn’t seem to be any lights left on even though the rangers had been notified of her arrival. Lexi figured that being this far from civilisation, there was a high likelihood that she’d have to look for a generator of some sort, to power things up while she was there.
Deciding to wait until daylight, she headed instead for the fireplace and lit a fire. At the same time, she wondered where the occupants of the colonial dwelling were. She’d read in the file from headquarters that this particular wildlife sanctuary was taken care of by two brothers, Duke Greyson and his brother Brent. She curled up in front of the fire with a blanket and within minutes she’d fallen asleep.
Duke Greyson was heading back to base after another long day of searching for his brother. They’d had an argument the day before about how boring and unfulfilling their lives had become. Brent had told Duke that he needed to lighten up a little, and in no uncertain terms, he should pull his bad attitude out of his ass where it had been hibernating for far too long and go to town. At least if he got laid it might take the rough edges off his personality and smooth out the cranky crinkles.
At six feet, four inches tall he had to duck to avoid hitting his head on a low-hanging branch. When he rose back to his full height, he could smell the aroma of burning timber. He knew that it was too damp in this part of the woods for a forest fire, so he presumed someone had lit a fire back at the cabin. He sent up a silent thank you, thinking it was his missing brother. It wasn’t anything new for them to argue or even fight in bear form, but usually Duke would call a truce and storm off by himself somewhere until his temper cooled down. This time however, it had been Brent who had stormed off to calm down. Duke expected him back long before now and was beginning worry he may have run into some kind of trouble.
He knocked the sediment off his boots against the bottom step, then removed them at the back door before entering the cabin. The sweet scent of apples and cinnamon invaded his brain and his nostrils flared. The bear inside his head growled from deep inside his chest… Mine.
His feet were moving in the direction of the mouth-watering aroma before he could regain control over his own actions. He came to a halt and tilted his head at what he discovered to be the source of his bear’s agitation.
She was beautiful, stunning… ‘Mine,’ his bear growled again, as he ran out of adjectives to describe the female sitting in his chair. He smirked to himself as he remembered the tale of ‘Goldie Locks and The Three Bears’ his mother used to tell them when they were only little. His cock stirred to life, quickly hardening behind the zipper of his jeans, reminding him it had been way too long since he’d been into town. Maybe his brother had been right; his bear growled savagely at the thought of being with any other woman except the one sleeping in front of him.
When she shuffled in the chair and moaned in her sleep, he almost lost it. His bear clawed its way to the surface to get a better look at their
