1514 A.D.
Dropping his left wing, Xander swept in an arc over the frozen water that was caught in the act of pushing waves onto the snowy shore. One more pass and then he would leave. He should have done so last summer when he’d found the Lightbearer and her mate, discovered she was fat with child.
Now seven months later, she was thin again, wandering along the edge of the beach, her skirt whipped about by the frigid wind, a child swaddled and protected in her arms. She lifted one hand, a silent acknowledgment that she knew the hawk in the sky was the one she’d left behind almost two years ago.
She was happy mated to her Lightbearer king. He could tell.
It was time to leave.
Fuck it. Xander deliberately did not turn around this time. He kept going, flying over the great, frozen water, away from the Lightbearers and their hidden coterie. That was no place for him.
He stayed close to shore, watching for signs of civilization. While he tended to steer clear of humans, sometimes they were handy, like when he craved a pint in which to drown his annoying … emotions. Finally, he spotted what he was looking for. An encampment. A group of humans.
Narrow boats carved from the trunks of trees lined the beach, turned upside down and half covered with snow. Three humans—men, he presumed, based on their bulk, although the pile of animal skins they wore could be misleading—crouched around a hole someone had carved into the ice. One suddenly jerked on the pole in his hand and pulled a flopping fish out of the opening.
Turning his attention to shore, Xander noted the humans’ settlement, tucked behind a row of evergreen trees lining the beach area. Smart to use the natural barrier as a shield against the bitter cold winds coming off the lake.
Dome-shaped dwellings had been erected around a large fire pit. A pile of dried corn lay nearby, and a cluster of horses stood around it, grazing. A dark-skinned, long-haired man sat on a log, fletching arrows, while another was nearby, carving something from a split log. A bow, perhaps, for the other one’s arrows.
Gliding past, Xander found a well-hidden area tucked between snowy sand dunes and a cluster of bushes with bare branches. He landed in the snow, shifted into human form, and frowned down at the thin overcoat, linen shirt, and brown wool pants he wore. His dark complexion and dark hair might blend with the group camped on the beach, but his clothing would not. The men he’d seen on the beach wore deer hide pants, many with fringe running up the sides, and feathers in their long, straight hair. Not to mention the layers of furry animal hides they piled onto their bodies to stave off the chill in the air. While it was often a benefit that shifters had a significantly higher body temperature than humans, it was also likely to cause him to stand out, when, at the moment, he would rather blend in with the small group who appeared determined to set down roots in this place, despite
