What Is Backpack Helicopter
A backpack helicopter is a motor, rotor, and controls assembly for a helicopter that can be attached to a person's back. This allows the person to walk about on the ground while wearing the backpack helicopter, and then use the backpack helicopter to fly. A harness similar to one used for a parachute is used, and there should also be a strap running between the legs. In certain designs, the amount of upward force may be increased by using a ducted fan design. There have been a number of attempts made to create backpack helicopters, with varying degrees of success.

Why did I write this book?
The story of writing this book started on 1989, when I was a student in the Secondary School of Advanced Students.
It is remarkably like the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Schools, which are now available in many advanced countries.
STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. This term is typically used to address an education policy or a curriculum choice in schools. It has implications for workforce development, national security concerns and immigration policy.
There was a weekly class in the library, where each student is free to choose any book and read for 1 hour. The objective of the class is to encourage the students to read subjects other than the educational curriculum.
In the library, while I was looking at the books on the shelves, I noticed huge books, total of 5,000 pages in 5 parts. The books name is The Encyclopedia of Technology
, which describes everything around us, from absolute zero to semiconductors, almost every technology, at that time, was explained with colorful illustrations and simple words. I started to read the encyclopedia, and of course, I was not able to finish it in the 1-hour weekly class.
So, I convinced my father to buy the encyclopedia. My father bought all the technology tools for me in the beginning of my life, the first computer and the first technology encyclopedia, and both have a great impact on myself and my career.
I have finished the entire encyclopedia in the same summer vacation of this year, and then I started to see how the universe works and to how to apply that knowledge to everyday problems.
My passion to the technology started mor than 30 years ago and still the journey goes on.
This book is part of The Encyclopedia of Emerging Technologies
which is my attempt to give the readers the same amazing experience I had when I was in high school, but instead of 20th century technologies, I am more interested in the 21st century emerging technologies, applications, and industry solutions.
The Encyclopedia of Emerging Technologies
will consist of 365 books, each book will be focused on one single emerging technology. You can read the list of emerging technologies and their categorization by industry in the part of Coming Soon
, at the end of the book.

In every book of The Encyclopedia of Emerging Technologies
, I am trying to get instant, raw search insights, direct from the minds of the people, trying to answer their questions about the emerging technology.
There are 3 billion Google searches every day, and 20% of those have never been seen before. They are like a direct line to the people thoughts.
Sometimes that’s ‘How do I remove paper jam’. Other times, it is the wrenching fears and secret hankerings they would only ever dare share with Google.

Chapter 1: Backpack helicopter
A backpack helicopter is a motor, rotor, and controls assembly for a helicopter that can be attached to a person's back. This allows the person to walk about on the ground while wearing the backpack helicopter, and then use the backpack helicopter to fly. It is similar to a parachute harness and should feature a strap that goes between the legs for further security (so the pilot does not fall out of the harness during flight). In certain designs, the amount of upward force may be increased by using a ducted fan design. Backpack helicopters have been attempted by a few different inventors, with varying degrees of success.
Generally speaking, a conventional helicopter and a backpack helicopter are distinguished from one another by two primary distinctions:
To begin, there is no major tail rotor, and the main rotors rotate in the opposite direction. Fine adjustment of a differential gear inside the rotor drive transmission allows for precise control of the yaw angle. Yaw is something that can be induced by adjusting one rotor such that it spins slightly faster than the other (turning motion).
Second, the rotors have a constant pitch, which helps keep things simple but makes it difficult to do autorotation in the case that the engine stops working. As a matter of course, a ballistic parachute would be included for reasons of safety.
In 1969, an issue of Popular Science magazine carried an article on a backpack helicopter that did not use contra-rotating rotors but instead used miniature jet engines arranged in a tip jet arrangement. It's possible that this concept may work in autorotation. Devices such as a backpack helicopter, which are similar to open-topped, miniature helicopters, also have a seat and leg supports. Backpack helicopters fall under this category. In principle, a rocket-powered jetpack would be less efficient than a helicopter since the rocket-powered jetpack would have a bigger specific impulse, but the helicopter would be better suited to hovering because the propelled gases would have lower velocities.

Several versions manufactured by Vortech are equipped with seating. In the past, they also produced a pure backpack variant that had two very long rotor blades, each of which was propelled by a little jet engine fueled by propane and mounted at the very end of the blade.

A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is one that can hover, take off and land vertically without depending on a runway. This categorization may encompass a range of kinds of aircraft including helicopters as well as thrust-vectoring fixed-wing aircraft and other hybrid aircraft with powered rotors such as cyclogyros/cyclocopters and gyrodynes.
Some vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft are also capable of flying in other flight modes, such as conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL), short takeoff and landing (STOL), and short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) (short take-off & vertical landing). Others, such as some types of helicopters, are unable to operate by any other method owing to the absence of landing gear that is capable of managing taxiing. VTOL may be broken down further into V/STOL (vertical or short take-off & landing).
