    Origin of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

ADHD or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most prevalent psychiatric conditions that impair the ability of a child to function normally. ADHD patients demonstrate inappropriate developmental patterns of impulsivity, attentiveness, and hyperactivity. ADHD is recognized as a psychiatric disorder that impairs the function of the frontal lobe of the brain. This causes individuals suffering from  ADHD to experience attention deficit, impaired ability to focus, emotional dysregulation, and difficulty in making decisions. Children with ADHD are usually tagged as 'troublemakers', owing to the developmental impairment in these children. Such children demonstrate impulsive behavior, become frustrated easily, and find it difficult to engage in social interactions. Early diagnosis, treatment, and management of ADHD play a significant role in limiting the progression of the disease into adulthood and preventing the onset of associated comorbid conditions. [1]

Subsequent sections describe the historical background of definitions, diagnosis, and treatment of ADHD.

    Definitions

ADHD was initially described 200 years ago, however, the definitions, clinical perspectives, and treatment and management options have advanced over the past few decades. Today, ADHD is known as the most prevalent behavioral disorder in children, associated with structural and functional alterations
