CHAPTER 1
What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Understanding ADHD
It is not difficult to understand what ADHD is, but drawing the line between a child who has ADHD and who is not listening to you can sometimes become tricky. That puts most parents in a dilemma. Strictly speaking and according to definition, ADHD is a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity or impulsivity that is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.
This means that children may exhibit signs of inattention or often have no control over impulsive behavior, but where such behaviors start to interfere with daily life routine at home, school, or social settings, then it is a problem that needs attention.
The common pattern of such kind of behavior has been ascribed many names over time including hyperactivity, minimal brain damage, minimal brain dysfunction, and hyperkinesis, but only in the late 70s was it termed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Many children nowadays are diagnosed with ADHD and it is a leading cause for a pediatrician or child psychiatrist referral. Estimates suggest that around 3-5% of school age children are affected among whom most display learning disabilities.
According to some facts, boys develop this chronic disorder 3 times as often as girls, and many adults may also have it, but since it is often never diagnosed, they may not know about it. ADHD can also be wrongly diagnosed as depression or personality disorder. If, as a child, ADHD is not diagnosed, it continues through adolescence and into adulthood.
We will read in the following pages that ADHD is not a problem to be afraid of, and if your child has it, there is no reason that they
